Finally! Glad to see this isn't delayed yet again, and will actually round off the best month of pre-orders for this year, including: 4K restorations of three Buster Keaton films (MoC), 4K restoration of my favourite John Carpenter film (Arrow Video), and now a 4K restoration of a classic French thriller (BFI). All of them will be world debuts, AFAIK, which certainly shows the strength of the UK boutique market right now!

NB" Pretty dumb of Criterion not to get in on that with their 4K restoration of Barry Lyndon, but there you go (I'm still gonna get Carnival of Souls at some point). Perhaps Indicator will announce Tourneur's Night of the Demon for that month...

Two years of moaning about delays, but remaining hopeful for the end product. I'm sure it'll be worth the wait! Eyes Without a Face certainly was, IMO (though less of an applause when it finally arrived, I was still excited for it...).

3rd August 2015 for mine! Got it locked for £5.93 thanks to a promo code (pre-ordered with MoC's Seconds). Really does feel like a two year wait when you're looking back!

Unfortunately they printed the restored version on authentic but highly volatile nitrate stock and it's being delivered by a couple of dodgy old Yodel trucks driven by down on their luck EU economic migrants over pothole riddled roads the local council can't afford to repair because of austerity budget cuts, so the chances of it actually arriving in time for the premiere are low... And if they do make it, they'll probably just leave a card saying they tried to deliver but you were out without bothering to ring the doorbell.

Which I believe is also the script for Ben Wheatley's remake.

I didn't realize until recently that the great Tim Lucas was able to do audio commentaries for 2 BFI releases that I didn't own.

Eyes without a Face

&

Alain Robbe-Grillet Six Films 1963-1974

Also a huge fan of actor Jean-Louis Trintignant so this set should be really nice.

For sure slipped thru the cracks at least for me. I had the Alain 6 Films set on my Amazon UK wishlist since it was released just because it seemed like the better deal as opposed to the single edition U.S. Redemption label releases that I don't think got a release for all 6 films.

but the fact you get Tim Lucas on audio commentaries on all of them in the U.K. set!

I recently looked did some searches to see if he was on any audio commentaries that I had missed and found out about these and a few others.

Can't wait to go thru the films... I have seen Eyes Without a Face many several times since the first Criterion DVD release then BLU. Now this blu I will re-watch it again before I listen to the commentary.

The list isn't up to date but here is a link I looked over.

Also there is a Supporting Characters Podcast that recently featured Tim Lucas for over 3 hours and it is highly informative. You can find it on iTunes and other formats for free.

Celine and Julie Go Boating upgrade in November!

Quote:
In Jacques Rivette's surreal and fascinating masterpiece, eccentric magician Celine (Juliet Berto) meets curious librarian Julie (Dominique Labourier). Their friendship soon sends then down a fantastical rabbit hole and into an apparently haunted house. With the aid of magical candy, they return time and time again to the mansion to spy on and eventually play parts in a gothic murder mystery.

A playful investigation of the boundary between life and art, and illusion and reality. Celine and Julie Go Boating was co-written by Eduardo de Gredorio and the film's actresses (including Bulle Ogier and Marie-France Pisier). It was influenced by Lewis Carrol, Henry James and Proust, and in turn influenced the likes of David Lynch and Susan Siedelman. It remains Rivette's most enduring, self-reflective and popular film.

Special features
  • Presented in High Definition
  • Jonathan Romney on Rivette (19 mins)
  • Tout la mémoire du monde (Alain Resnais, 1956, 21 mins)
  • The Haunted Curiosity Shop (R W Paul, 1901, 2 mins)
  • Illustrated booklet featuring an essay by Susan Seidelman, and film credits

This new collection brings together three of Ken Loach's finest films from the 1990s, titles linked by the director's career-long drive to tackle social injustice and contemporary political issues.

In Riff Raff, Glaswegian jailbird Stevie (Robert Carlyle) heads to London to find work but discovers a world of corruption and degradation.

Inner-city poverty is brought to the fore in Raining Stones, as unemployed Bob's (Bruce Jones) desperate attempts to afford a communion dress for his daughter results in a succession of disasters.

Inspired by real events, Ladybird Ladybird is an emotional and harrowing story of a woman's fight to keep her children and relationship intact in the face of bureaucratic interference.

Riff-Raff UK | 1991 | 1.37:1 | colour | 96 mins

Raining Stones UK | 1993 | 1.37:1 | colour | 91 mins

Ladybird Ladybird UK | 1994 | 1.66:1 | colour | 102 mins

Special features:

Includes a newly remastered presentation of Ladybird Ladybird approved by the director

Ken Loach: The Guardian Lecture at the National Film Theatre with Derek Malcolm (1992, 71 mins)

Face to Face: Jeremy Isaccs talks to Ken Loach (Geraldine Dowd, 1991, 39 mins): the former Head of Channel Four discusses the filmmaker's life and career

Carry on Ken (Toby Reisz, 2006, 47 mins): an in-depth documentary appraising the director

Original trailers for all three films

Stills Galleries

Fully illustrated booklet with new writing by David Archibald, original reviews and full film credits.

(I've never seen a Ken Loach film, so wasn't sure if this had been posted already.)

I think it got posted when it was first announced but no harm in reminding people now it's almost out IMO.

Only Loach film I have seen is I, Daniel Blake, which I thought was brilliant. Then again, I watched it in a cinema screening brimming with pensioners and they were loving every second of it, so maybe that enhanced it slightly. Definitely enough to interest me in this set though, I just don't want to add something to the watch pile that I won't get to for a while. Definitely one I'll be keeping an eye out for though.

Tough call, for me. I like Loach, but I have two of these three films already via the Twilight Time BD. The BFI set looks lovely, but there are several other box sets competing for my money at the moment: Buñuel, Arrow's noir set, e.g.

Anyone know how the BFI film festival works. Id like to see a couple of films and the tickets open at 10AM. How fast do they sell out?

Depends on the film. The galas are usually sold out prior to public sale tho.
