According to Ben Stoddart on FB who worked on it he said its better than Volume One. Though he did say he was biased too

I've sent an email.
That really sucks. Its completely put me off ordering the disc. As I live in Australia they are likely to send me a faulty one. I'll just have to wait until longer.

When they replied to my email they said that they would be contacting Sony to get their stock updated. If you wait a couple of weeks before ordering a copy I think you'll be fine.

Has anyone had problems playing any of the original 2009 BFI blu ray discs? Freezing and skipping occurs throughout ALL THE RIGHT NOISES, MAN OF VIOLENCE and the documentary on WINSTANLEY. Other flipsides I bought made around this time play ok but these discs have persistant faults at the same points in any machine. Is this a surface coating issue? Or something else? Where did BFI get these original BDs made?

It does exactly what it says on the tin, really. The films are pretty variable in quality (except for Oscar Micheaux, who is a consistently great filmmaker), to the point that some are downright duff, but the set as a whole is lovingly put together, exhaustive, and just fascinating from a film history perspective.

I just finished watching The Garden (haven't evaluated the rest of the set yet) and it looks and sounds great. Presentation-wise this set's similar to the first.

Amazon have reduced the forthcoming Bergman : A Year in A Life to £16.16 an absolute bargain for a 3 disk BD.

Previous best was £19.99 + shipping direct from BFI or £21.99 + shipping at Zavvi.

Nice. I've had that pre-ordered for quite a while, kinda hoping a drop would happen before it shipped.

Now if only the others coming up soon will do likewise.

The silents are pretty great, especially the Micheaux ones, but his sound films are all over the place in quality. However, of the sound films in the set, I found The Bronze Buckaroo, Spencer Williams' The Blood of Jesus, and Micheaux's Birthright to be terrific.

I was waiting for the details to be announced (and a price drop ) -

This release includes both the theatrical version of the film and the expanded, four-hour edition made for Swedish TV.

Special features:

Vox Lipoma (2018, 11 mins): satirical animation about Ingmar Bergman's power, sexuality and relationships

Ingmar Bergman Guardian Interview (1982, 60 mins, audio only): the director in conversation with film critic Geoff Andrew, recorded at the NFT

Bergman: A Year in a Life Q&A (2019, 17 mins): post-screening talk with director Jane Magnusson

UK theatrical trailer (2019)

Fully illustrated booklet with new writing on the film by Jane Magnusson, BFI programmer-at-large Geoff Andrew and full film credits.

Is the Jarman Vol. 1 set OOP? Not going to panic-buy just yet as these BFI sets usually hang around for a while but just noticed it's out of stock a lot of places.

Michael Brooke said on another forum that Vol. 1 is officially OOP.

I managed to get the last copy of this in Fopp Covent Garden today. I assume the 2nd set is limited to the same number of copies?

I put off getting this on release as BFI sets can take an age to go OOP. But reading the forums earlier in the week I feared I'd left it too late. Having no access to a HMV or Fopp, I was able to nab one of the last two copies on the CEX website on Tuesday. The other copy disappeared around the same time. Thankfully it arrived it mint condition. Can't wait to get stuck in.

There are quite a few more for this price!

Great prices, think I'll definitely order The Comfort of Strangers as I was going to get it on release but didn't for whatever reason. Might also go for It Happened Here and Distant Voices, Still Lives as I'm curious to see both of those. Not sure about a few others though (Separate Tables, Psychomania, The Eye of the Needle).

Good prices on La Belle et la Bête and Celine and Julie Go Boating especially!

I wonder if any of these are going to be £6 in Fopp or 2 for £13 at HMV? Think that happened last time these were quite cheap at Base.
