I would (metaphorically) eat my hat if the notoriously protective Toho allowed the BFI to release any Kurosawa on 4K before they did so in Japan. Note that the BFI pointedly don't mention that Seven Samurai is from a new restoration (although one does exist).

Especially considering they wouldn't even give Criterion access to the best master material for the Godzilla set.

I'd love th see BFI issue a Blu-ray of their restoration of the silent version of The Constant Nymph, starring Ivor Novello. FIngers crossed!

Their 2012 restoration of Hitchcock's The Pleasure Garden with 20 minutes additional footage is long overdue. That and both versions of Blackmail would be nice.

The reason we've been waiting so long for someone like Network to release The Pleasure Garden is that they need €30k to record the score. Why they didn't just go down the crowd funding route I'm not entirely sure.

It seems likely we will get some more Bluray releases anyway - good chance we will get more Ozu and Kurosawa and the mention of Naruse could mean Floating Clouds might get released as it was restored a few years ago! It is very excting!

The BFI home video label have been giving us some of the greatest releases over the past few years - 2021 has been a phenomenal year for them!

It would be great to see them release works by some of the other directors they've name checked, such as Oshima, Mitsuo Yanagimachi, and Shunji Iwai.

The City of Prague Philharmonic - who tend to be as good or bad as their conductor - used to offer an all-in price (inc. recording facilities and costs) of around £10-12,000 for a single film score or album with fairly small increments for multi-disc projects, but right now I'd settle for the extremely talented Neil Brand at the piano.

BFI won't be releasing any UHDs of Kurosawa titles anytime soon:

I believe the high cost is down to licensing all the K-Pop songs...

Does anybody know if BFI's Charlie Chaplin shorts blu-rays still come with booklets? I see that they're still mentioned on the site but I doubt they keep up with that. Also, how do the BFI editions compare with the Flicker Alley sets, particularly in regard to the booklets (and other extras)?

They are both pre-Spring 2019 releases* so I believe they should still come with booklets!

* at the end of the linked page it says:

Beginning with these spring titles, our new releases will only include a booklet in the first pressing.
