Why I can't pre-order upcoming BFI titles from Amazon? I wanted to pre-order Tam Lin, The Draughtsman's Contract, and Ghost Stories for Christmas. They are all "temporarily out of stock". I can't imagine that they have all sold out, so what's the issue?

They won’t let people outside of the UK preorder for some reason. Once the discs are released, you should be able to order them.

Last night I watched I Start Counting on the BFI blu.
The movie is basically a Hitchcockian plot by way of kitchen sink realism. More specifically, Shadow of a Doubt seems to have been in the mind of the novelist Audrey Lindop when she wrote the book what became this movie. Early teen Jenny Agutter is a adopted Catholic girl with a huge crush on her almost 20-years older stepbrother Bryan Marshall. Her ardor is so dominant that when she becomes suspicious of him being the dreaded murderer of young women in the neighborhood, she works to destroy the evidence she finds, which causes some conflict with her Catholic soul. The other major characters are her drug-taking second brother (Gregory Philips) and the saucy best friend (Claire Sutcliffe) who may be competition for her crush's attentions. ISC was decent, but I have to say underwhelming. There's something of a TV movie feel about it (it's shot on 16mm, I think, and has that grainy diffuse look). The emotions are very on the nose, and it doesn't really grip you or get under your skin the way a Hitchcock film could, when he aimed for that. Helmer David Greene leans on the working class style, opting to tamp down the drama, and there are no bravura suspense sequences of the level that Hitchcock would have concocted. Basil Kirchin's score is prominent and unusual, although sometimes it also distracted me from the on-screen proceedings instead of underlying the action. Given the modest production, the video on the BFI blu is good, although there are source limitations of brightness and density fluctuations. Audio is generally clear with a bold edge to the score. Of the extras, which are plentiful, I have so far only seen the Jenny Agutter interview, in which she talks about her experience of making the film (It was a happy shoot with an enthusiastic director and some very helpful co-actors). ![]() |

The FDA are saying that the BFI will be re-releasing Rashomon theatrically on January 6th. Now chalk this down as unlikely but possible but I can't see any obvious anniversary, so maybe they've got the 4K restoration that was screened in Japan a few years ago?

Enys Men will hit UK cinemas on 13th January following the LFF screening in October, coinciding with Q&As with Jenkin and Mary Woodvine across Cornwall and the UK, and even a BFI Player/BFI Southbank season of related films - with the Blu-ray released in April 2023.

They despatched Saturday with the lie will be delivered on Sunday as they must mark with a hold indicating wait until Monday. Despite being at my local AL depot since the early hours of Sunday doesn’t look like it’s coming today. They usually have two vans to my area, one leaving around 11am other around 6pm but it’s still stuck at the depot. Also fearful of the condition as heard else where that at least some copies came in the new cheapo Amazon paper bag packaging giving no protection so arrived damaged. Amazon are bonkers using this as even using on vinyl so people getting cracked discs. |
