All blind buys, but I've gone for That Sinking Feeling, Little Malcolm, Private Road and Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush.

Ordered some new Flipsides for the first time in ages on the 2 for £15. I’ve plumped for Psychomania, Symptoms, Legend of the Witches/Secret Rites, The Black Panther, That Sinking Feeling & The Orchard End Murder.

If anyone’s looking for recommendations, I’d count Deep End, Herostratus and I Start Counting as the best of this line that I’ve seen.

The only Flipside I haven’t enjoyed at all is Duffer which is a really gruelling and unpleasant watch, while the supporting feature was too dull for me to finish. Not sure I’d recommend The Ballad of Tam Lin either, watched it within the last year and can barely remember a thing about it (although I did add the title song to my Spotify 60s playlist!)

So, according to a member from the Criterionforum the previously canceled Watership Down 4k might actually happen and will be released this November. Has anyone heard something? Is there a source for this or just pure speculation?

That was mentioned by rapta, who's also a member on here. I wonder where the news comes from? Perhaps Ben Stoddart dropped hints of those on FB? They bumped a thread that was dormant for 3 months to mention it, so I have to imagine they know something.

A little birdie told me earlier this evening. It was mentioned by BFI themselves at a certain film event that started this week (actually an event I've been meaning to attend for years now).

Just as good news is Seven Samurai 4K apparently set for October...was expecting more Kurosawa after the Ikiru announcement (and more Toho after the Naruse), so glad to see them go 'big' before the end of the year. I'm sure Criterion will announce something soon as well for the US folk.

Fantastic news. Really glad they managed to resolve the issue with Adams' estate after the Rosen debacle; I was worried it would end up vanishing into a licensing black hole in the aftermath.

And of course Seven Samurai is just manna from heaven.

Sorry if someone has already posted this, but it is quite exciting news:

Quote:
The British Film Institute will release on Blu-ray Michael Powell: Early Works. The two-disc set is scheduled to arrive on the market on September 16.

Description: Throughout the 1930s, director Michael Powell (The Red Shoes, A Matter of Life and Death, Peeping Tom) honed his craft on a succession of modestly budgeted feature films produced under the United Kingdom's screen 'quota' system. Many of these titles remain lost but, those which survive, reveal a burgeoning talent that readily established Powell as one of British cinema's leading lights. This new 2-disc collection brings together five of those early films directed by Powell, newly remastered by the BFI National Archive, including murder mysteries, sensational thrillers and a comedy caper. Discover the formative works of a filmmaking icon, available on Blu-ray for the first time.

FILMS:
  • Rynox (1932, 47 mins)
  • Hotel Splendide (1932, 53 mins)
  • The Night of the Party (1934, 63 mins)
  • Her Last Affaire (1936, 68 mins)
  • Behind the Mask (aka The Man Behind the Mask) (1936, 55 mins)

Special Features and Technical Specs:
  • NEWLY REMASTERED from original camera materials and presented in High Definition
  • Newly recorded audio commentaries by Marc David Jacobs (Rynox, Behind the Mask, Emeric Pressburger Home Movie), Lawrence Napper and Dom Delargy (Hotel Splendide), Dr Josephine Botting and Vic Pratt (The Night of the Party), and Ian Christie (Her Last Affaire), Bryony Dixon (Riviera Revels)
  • Riviera Revels: Travelaughs No. 1 and No. 2 (1927, 27 mins total): Powell himself appears in these rare short comedy curiosities from the silent era>
  • Inside the Archive: The Early films of Michael Powell (2024): a new documentary exploring the BFI National Archive's role in rediscovering and remastering the early films of Michael Powell
  • Visions, Dreams and Magic: The Unmade Films of Michael Powell (2023, 41 mins): documentary by Henry Barnes exploring some of Michael Powell's unrealized films
  • Emeric Pressburger Home Movie (1954, 21 mins): Powell and Pressburger are both seen on camera as they travel to Argentina for a 1954 Film Festival
  • First pressing only: Booklet featuring contributions from James Bell, Marc David Jacobs, Lawrence Napper, Pamela Hutchinson, Ian Christie, Bryony Dixon, Claire Smith, Dr Josephine Botting and Kieron Webb

Here's a larger pic of the set. I think the key difference between this, and the previous one is the lack of a Blu-ray disc, which is now being sold in a separate edition.

Interesting in that previously it was a single £30 release within both UHD and BD and the merchandise. Now they are selling them separately at £30 and £25 respectively.

So a worse deal if you buy the UHD as no longer has a BD as well, but if you only want BD saves a few quid.
