Plus I can't remember criterion policy but the 4k might not come with a blu ray even if they released one, so nice to have different formats.

Thanks for the info.
A question, would pre-ordering these Kurosawas now guarantee that they´d have booklet?I know there were dramas before (I remember posts about Bait). Also, would the HMV´s 20% worked on all these? Thanks

Yes pre-ordering should include a booklet as far as I am aware, the only exception I could see would be if the sold out of the first pressing before release date so just via preorders, which I never saw happen before to be honest so seems extremely unlikely, and even if they did I suppose they may well extend the print run so everyone getting one will get the booklet.

I would suspect the booklet would be around for a bit after release too. I'm not sure of dramas before so possibly someone might know more on that.

Regarding HMV discount yes that will also work on all these titles.

I will get around to pre-ordering at some point once we get a bit nearer. I'd say you have no worry and plenty of time to get the orders in

Little theory: noticed that the catalogue number BFIU0007 is not yet taken - something they started to work on after the Gregory's Girl UHD, but before The Wages of Fear UHD (and obviously the Cronos, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo/Sanjuro discs). Any guess what it could be? A nice 007 UHD release would be great, just saying...

I recall Bait selling out of first pressing before release date. Think that is the ONLY example regarding BFI titles.

No idea where the rights on them are,
but Never Say Never Again and Niven's Casino Royal, are the only things I can think of, short of a documentary or a tv special.

Unfortunately, 0007 is taken by the standard 4K edition of Get Carter (https://shop.bfi.org.uk/get-carter-s...-ultra-hd.html)

So the running "spines" (for those keeping score) for BFI's UHD releases so far:

0001: The Proposition
0002: The Seventh Seal
0003: Get Carter
0004: Watership Down
0005: The Haunting of Julia
0006: Gregory's Girl
0007: Get Carter (standard)
0008: The Wages of Fear
0009: Cronos
0010: Seven Samurai
0011: Yojimbo/Sanjuro

Christina Newland posted on Instagram today that she's curated a Luchino Visconti season for BFI next year, many of the films being 4K restorations (though not necessarily recent ones I suppose). Could mean some physical releases hopefully.

Ikiru didn't have a slipcover, right?

I have it my notes as such, but I don't recall where I saw that.

Nope, it did not - but had a lovely little booklet, if that matters

A new disc of The Leopard would be great.

20th Century Fox had the distribution right in the UK (and sublicensed it to BFI back in 2010), so now it's Disney...

But if the BFI had a sublicense once they could maybe get one again.

Again, that was 2010, before the acquisition of Fox by Disney. Of course, one can dream, never say never, etc., etc., but Disney is a tough nut to crack, to say the least.

Wondering whether or not to save £5 - Seven Samurai: 4K or just the normal blu ray release?

Can't decide.

An official release of IL STRANIERO would be amazing, possibly with both Italian and French sound.

The reviews on the 4k release seem to be very good,
10/10 and 5/5 that I have seen so far.

For the sake of a fiver you might as well get the best possible version.

I personally am going for the regular Blu-ray editions each time, since I have a 4K player but still a 1080p setup (projector). Will double-dip in a sale/offer for 4K discs of my favourite BFI, Eureka, Indicator, Arrow etc if I ever do upgrade to 4K setup. A shame not many of the boutiques offer Dual Format releases anymore, as it does future-proof your collection...

So in short, if you have a 4K screen/setup (or plan on getting one soon), go for the 4K every time. If you don't, and also want to save a few bob each time, just get the Blu-ray.

PS: I've been forced to get some 4K discs from Arrow due to them being Region Free, but only a handful and generally some of my favourite films/directors. Frustratingly they region-locked the Paramount-licensed Blu-rays, but other US labels often don't (e.g. Fun City Editions).

Seven Samurai 4K Limited arrived today.
The special features Blu-ray disc is covered in yellow fingerprints.
The disc was made in IFPI LY25 - Sony DADC, Thalgau, Austria.
https://www.sonydadc.com/careers/europe-at/austria/

EDIT: I gave the disc a clean and all seemed fine... but when I breathed on it a fingerprint appears again!
