How long does it take them to respond typically? I sent an email, to the proper address this time, and wondering how long I should wait. (Sent the first one to help@ on the 9th, didn't hear anything today; sent the second one to returns@ a couple hours ago...)

Looks like it's been a rather pricey experiment, going to cost about 17 bucks to send it back, unless they happen to reimburse return expenses, which I rather doubt they will do.

Oddly enough, my experience with the same set has been completely the opposite as yours. I received it in a wrap around box in mint condition.

The only time I've ever had to email them (about a backordered item), they responded hours later. If i were in your position I'd ask if they can replace it and pay for the shipping back, otherwise be wary of ordering in the future. I guess you could call them as well? Never tried that.

I'll send them another email late tonight before I hit the sack (early morning there). See if somehow the return shipping can be reimbursed. My prior email(s) were a little more open-ended, wondering what my options were. See what happens. (Did do their website return rigamarole, so it's packed and ready to go back if that's how it turns out.)

If you remember to post an update it will be appreciated - for if my luck runs out with them in the future! Hope you get things sorted

I did hear back from base.com yesterday and today. Bottom line is they will cover the return shipping. And I will figure out what to do at some point down the road regarding the Dreyer set. For now the damaged copy is on its way back to them.

In the meantime, Spring In A Small Town jumped way too high at Amazon just about the time I was going to order it, so base.com may be getting a dvd order from me if they don't do likewise.

Jules Dassin's Night and the City is getting a Criterion release;

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=1029

Any chance of a BFI release to supercede their DVD?

I was expecting something nicer with the limited editions. Is that how all of the limited editions look?

The only other two I have are the Rossellini 'War' trilogy and the Kurosawa 'Samurai' set, both of which were digi packs;

They also cost about twice as much as the Chaplin set as well though.

Yeah it does seem a little pricy for the amount you're getting - I've paid half that for 2xBD BFI releases before. But I guess the restoration costs, extensive booklet (I'm guessing) and slipcover make the price a little higher than their standard releases. I'll personally wait 'til it drops in price a little (£15-odd) before I think about getting it...way too many good BFI titles at the moment!

Tbf, it's £18

The Rossellini war trilogy is currently £38 on Amazon. The Kurosawa set is £40.

As a LE I don't think the Chaplin set is too bad. Personally I'd have paid a few £ more to get a Digipack, but that aside, happy with it.

£18 for 12 shorts is more than fair considering the Flicker Alley set hasn't gone below $45 and the amount of time and money spent restoring the films.

Yes, it looks like a fair price for me too.
This being written, I do believe the price FA was asking for was pure non sense.

I didn't mean to come across as if I was knocking it, for the price the set is a great deal. I just though being a limited edition set it would stand out a bit more outside the amaray case with a slip.

As I said earlier I actually wouldn't have minded paying a little more for the Digipack style packaging. It IS a really good value package, but for another couple of quid, it would still have been

True, the digipacks from the BFI usually stands out of their more common packaging (which, to be fair, is usually not BFI strong suit).
