Anybody manage to get a copy of The Birth of a Nation? It's currently out of stock on amazon.

Yeah I got a copy last week. I've got the MoC version too and the BFI upgrade is considerable, if not revolutionary.

Ordered the Preminger set last night and shipped this morning, so its in stock. Lets see what condition it arrives in. However the Herzog set came ok from zavvi last year.

My Preminger set also shipped this moring. If it is packaged the same way as my Rossellini set (also from Zavvi), it should be fine.

Yeah, tempted to get the Bill Morrison one but wondering whether it might drop in price again sometime? I doubt it's a huge seller. It definitely looks like it could even be the best box set from the BFI this year (other than Dreyer). Certainly the best packaging of all their box sets to date.

So yeah, might go for it but then again the Preminger and Rossellini sets are a similar price. I'm bad at making decisions like this...and am a little put off by Zavvi's dodgy shipping record. They're a huge headache to return things to. It took me over a month to return something to them earlier in the year (it arrived smashed to pieces).

Wow. I think I'll order it in that case. I too have the Eureka release and have been waiting for comparisons to surface but if it is a considerable upgrade as you say that gives me more confidence to buy now. Thanks for the reponse.

Can't argue with that. Ordering from Zavvi is always an exercise in Russian Roulette!

No worries. And incidentally, the extensive extras are almost all different from the MoC version (including The Coward, a 69-minute silent from 1911), making the cost more palatable. I doubt you'll be disappointed!

it was 17.99 last week so I imagine they have lots of stock to get rid of or something. Either way it's a bargain IMHO.

The Otto Preminger collection once again down to £24.99 over at Zavvi. The two Rossellini sets are £19.99 each. There's also a £5.00 coupon (MANIC5) for orders over £50, valid only today.

Today I saw Classe Tous Risques, a solid crime film by Claude Sautet, starring 2 terrific stars Lino Ventura and Jean-Paul Belmondo. While in some ways the film shares connections with Jean-Pierre Melville's gangster movies, here lead character Ventura has family and his actions are often dictated by their welfare. Very nicely done, highly recommended to genre fans. The transfer on the BFI blu is terrific, with deep contrast and fine filmic texture. There's a decent documentary on the career of Lino Ventura featuring many of his colleagues and friends.

it's also quite different in style to what Melville achieved, parts of it reminded me more of Jacques Becker's Touchez Pas Au Grisbi (blu please).

Both of these were released in Japan, licensed from StudioCanal. Since the HD masters are available for them, they should be released English-friendly one day, just like A Woman Is a Woman & Alphaville.

Studio Canal did a region B release of Becker's 'Casque D'or' as well which is a very good release.

Well, would you believe my luck... bought the Soviet Influence vol.1 from Amazon this December and it's not a V2.

I sent an email to Ben Stoddart at BFI, hope the replacement program is still on.
