Fopp in Covent Garden has a good chunk of one wall dedicated to BFI at the moment. I picked up Symptoms for £8 today

Might pop in and pick that one up actually. Did they still have some £6 ones? There are a couple of Cassavetes' I still need.

Sounds like it's £8 for DF releases and £6 for Blu-ray only then. Some of them might be cheaper in HMV's 5 for £30/3 for £20 then!

Not necessarily. There weren't many for £6. Most were £8. A couple on the display stand were just the regular price, e.g. Akenfield at £11. The box sets are all attractively priced, but I have most of them already.

Lots of Ozu titles at £8 apiece. Was tempted, but I just spent a lot in the Arrow sale, so I reigned myself in.

Took me a little while but I managed to collect all of those. I thought they'd be OOP by now!

Cheers for the heads-up. Think I'll go in anyway just to have a peek and maybe try and get Symptoms (been wanting to see it since it was announced).

It's definitely worth picking up. A fine, quiet film complemented by almost miraculous work by the BFI.

I'm really looking forward to watching it. I'm putting together a sort of "English Gothic" series for the wife and I to watch over winter:
  • Death Line
  • The Wicker Man
  • Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell
  • Symptoms
  • Vampyres
  • Frightmare
  • The Shout

Can't wait!

Just saw a post from BFI on Facebook about the festival, with a still from Nicolette Krebitz's Wild (which has nothing to do with Cheryle Strayed or Reese Witherspoon) as the thumbnail. And this has immediately gotten my hopes up that BFI will release it on Blu... I saw it at the San Francisco Intl. FF and have been disappointed it didn't get picked up for wider distribution there. I suspect there's no direct correlation between a showing at the BFI Film Festival and a release by BFI, but I can dream!

The Nightcomers
The Legend Of Hell House
Tower Of Evil
The Asphyx

Dickieduvet's suggestions are great, as is your list.

I'd also recommend Psychomania (a supremely silly movie, but also oddly sinister) and The Blood On Satan's Claw (sort of a more overtly pagan take on Witchfinder General)

The Blood on Satan's Claw is the pinnacle of it's sort IMO. As is The Wicker Man.

Just had a dispatch order for Quay Brothers Collection, a blind buy on my behalf.

Received the Quay Brothers Blu-ray this morning from Amazon. So anyone who has already had a despatch notice will probably get it before Monday.
This is an incredible set. They are certainly not a poor man's Svankmajer. The Quay Brothers films exist in their own unique universe. There's a macabre, gothic sensibility that Svankmajer never achieved (although I like his films). And at the price this has been going for on pre-order...it's a must-purchase.

The person who called them a poor man's version of Švankmajer is talking out their arse and probably read it on an IMDB message board. Sure they work in very broadly the same field and Švankmajer is a Quay Brothers acknowledged influence on their work but accusing them of plagiarism is just daft.

And as stated above the Quay's do indeed have a more gothic feel than Švankmajer ever managed (ever aimed for?)
