Final nail in the coffin for Amazon - not only did my copy of the Brothers Quay set only just arrive, it's been bashed to hell in the post. Guess I'm going to have to order it from HMV instead! Insufficient packaging, £20 minimum, late deliveries...why did I even keep my pre-order?

Very tempted to get this, especially if it drops to the standard £10.99 price.

Being a demmed Colonial, wot, I have no access to HMV.

I tarried too long over the Amazon offering, and now it's strictly for Prime Members.

Yeah, I just saw that after sorting out a return/refund! What's with that? If anything it just puts people off, especially if they know HMV or other competitors offer free postage as standard (and much better packaging too). The only thing Amazon have going for them are a helpful CS, and only a decent service otherwise if you agree to pay a yearly/monthly charge.

Seems the 'Prime Exclusive' thing has been attached to anything even vaguely affordable, especially if it's around £10 (or less).

Yeah I'm going to Fopp at the weekend but will be quite busy so worried it would get damaged (I'm going in to get a copy of Symptoms and Black Sunday, maybe The Lobster too). I've ordered a copy from HMV for £10.99 and it should arrive tomorrow or Friday, and probably in mint condition!

I just picked up Symptoms, Beat Girl and Expresso Bongo for £8 each in there, thus completing my Flipside collection.

I guess it's the look of the draw as mine just arrived this morning from Amazon in perfect condition.

Lucky! Did it come in the same dodgy thin A5 card mailer that mine did? I think I've only had books or CD's arrive okay in that kind of packaging (and maybe the occasional non-slipcovered DVD/Blu-ray). If it's been in the post for 48 hours and jammed in the postman's bag amongst other stuff, no way is that kind of packaging enough to protect those infamous BFI slipboxes.

Returned mine now but it did look lovely. Nice design to the slipcover, booklet outside the box (becoming something of a norm these days eh?) and 2 discs in a clear Amaray. Hefty, to say the least. Let's hope my HMV order arrives intact (it most certainly will).

For those who have not seen the Wise (masterpiece), you have to know that a certain monsieur Melville cited it as his all-time favourite, along with The Asphalt Jungle, and once said he watched it more than 100 times! You can definitely see an influence in his latter films!

The African-American Pioneers set dropped a couple of quid on Amazon, down to 52.99.

dvdcompare says a 2k scan from a 35mm print held by the BFI National Archive. And no resto apparently as the same review says lots of damage.

Good old HMV - Inner Sanctums arrived in mint condition and less than 24 hours after I ordered it!

The tone of their review is essentially the opposite of Beaver's...

I know rapta mentioned it briefly, but I wonder if we'll get any clarification/reassurance from the BFI regarding Sam Dunn's departure? He seemed particularly big on archive BBC releases and the Flipside series - probably the two strands of BFI's output I most value - so it would be very unfortunate to see any change in that regard. BFI had (or rather, is having) a sensational 2016, so there are certainly big boots to fill. We're due announcements of the first quarter of 2017 over the next few weeks, so that might give some indication. Also - I don't think we ever got an official press release for the fourth quarter of this year did we? I know there isn't a great deal but I'm surprised they didn't issue something.

Dunn said this in an interview last year posted here:

Quote:
There will be more little-seen British feature films from the Flipside in the near future, but we’re increasingly setting our sites on more and more ambitious TV-related projects which are finally giving important series and one-off plays a new lease of life on DVD and Blu-ray.
I know we've had the Watkins, Ken Russell and Alan Clarke sets since then, but this statement would seem to hint at quite a bit more, especially with the mention of 'important series'.

Maybe the change of hands meant they couldn't deliver an announcement proper. It's pretty evident that The Crying Game has been pushed back to February, The Wages of Fear will probably be delayed by another year (or at least 6 months), and The Glass Shield turned out to be DVD-only. Strange they didn't come up with one or two others to replace these before the year's out, but hopefully they're busy setting up some exciting titles for early 2017? I still have plenty to catch up with this year anyway.

There were press releases about the Black Star season which mentioned a lot of the releases this quarter...perhaps they felt that was enough?

Well to be honest I'm at the point where I dont read anything Gary writes anymore, I look at the stats and glance at the caps (and even the caps arent always reliable, his caps for Criterion's Lone Wolf set looks very different to the caps on this site's review).

To be fair (and a bit harsh), I've always used Beaver mostly (in some case : only) for disc specs and region locking. That's the one thing Gary gets right 99% of the time (he still messes up sometimes between 1080i and 1080p).

As I type this "Loving Memory" by Tony Scott is £4.62 delivered from Amazon Marketplace. Never seen it but thought it was worth a punt.
