I saw a copy of The Wages of Fear in HMV Exeter today so I know it exists.
Got home an hour ago, excited to finally see my own copy had arrived...opened it to find Amazon had sent me Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds OST on CD instead. You have to be ****ing kidding! I have complained. It's out of stock, so I'm not getting my replacement copy anytime soon. FFS... |

This is the living proof of Derrida's assertion "Chaque victime trouve son bourreau".....
You've all imagined the scenario that will happen to you in gruesome detail, and voila! Mine's due tomorrow, and having never once foreseen mayhem, I don't expect any trouble at all.... |

Great, open it up to find its a BFI branded re-release of Affleck film The Sum of All Fears. Booklet's a good read though whilst we wait 2 years for the disc replacement program to come through.
Edit: In all seriousness, I should open it up this evening double check in case the disc is/isn't actually in there. ![]() |

So happy we're getting When The Wind Blows, it's one of my all time fave animation films.
Only really want Jubilee from the Jarman set so hoping for individual releases on that one. An Actor's Revenge is a pretty good movie too so i may pick that one up as well. And then there's La Belle Et La Bete which i presume will be the 4K restoration? Glad these are all a few months away! |

When the Wind Blows appears to contain a compilation of all the 20 or so Protect and Survive shorts. Nice to at long last be able to upgrade (and probably bin) the old DD Video VHS of these but my word taken in one stretch they're one of the most depressing things you'll ever witness on home video. Imagine up to 72 hours of a none stop loop on every TV channel at any point interrupted by death or fatal maiming in a nuclear attack?
Either way it looks like a cracking long over due edition. Please BFI get your hands on Threads and complete the UK nuclear holocaust HD trilogy. |

Definitely getting the Ichikawa, which I've only read very enticing things about.
Depending on the picture quality, I will upgrade the Bergman (even though that's one of the only films of his I don't much like). |

An interesting line up to start the 2018, with many titles on BD for the first time !Glad that I held back on $9.99 deal for WTWB during SAE sale and for the The Magic Flute on Blu-ray.

Interesting that the BFI Video guy I emailed last year said they had absolutely no plans for Japanese upgrades, and then they announce exactly that for Ichikawa's An Actor's Revenge. I guess if they caught wind of a 4K restoration that made a lot of sense, but I kinda wish they'd think about their Kurosawa library a bit more - especially Ikiru, Red Beard, Stray Dog, High and Low, Drunken Angel. I'm sure those have been restored in recent years and wonder why BFI haven't upgraded them yet. Hope we see at least one later in 2018.
Still, very happy about more Ichikawa. Was hoping Criterion might release The Makioka Sisters in the UK soon, and if MoC could upgrade Alone Across the Pacific or Kokoro that'd obviously be wonderful. Fires on the Plain would be another good one to show up at some point, if only because of Third Window recently releasing the Tsukamoto version. An Actor's Revenge was probably the most obvious to come from a UK label, but regardless I'm definitely getting it right away! When the Wind Blows is something I had wondered they might release one day, especially since they've been chipping away at the Film4 catalogue in the last year or two (and it was already released in the US on Blu-ray). I haven't seen it in years so that's another probable pre-order. Might make it a delightfully cynical double-bill with The Snowman at some point, just to give Christmas a bit of an 'edge' one year. Hoping this means we'll get Threads eventually too...or other Film4 wants, like Ghost Dog and Local Hero! ![]() La Belle et la Bęte is another nice surprise. I didn't really expect them to upgrade it anytime soon, but there you go. The Criterion has been out for five or six years, so I wonder if BFI were waiting for a new master or will just use the same one? Bergman I'm intrigued about, so will pick up The Magic Flute at some point. Jarman is something I'd consider eventually maybe, but I doubt I'd actually watch his films very often at all (Blue was enough for me). PS: I wonder if other Japanese DVD titles from BFI will be upgraded, other than Kurosawa/Ozu. Woman in the Dunes? They'd have to get there before Criterion I suppose, but I'd be over the moon about any Teshigahara in HD. Godzilla and/or The Mysterians would be very fun too...shame there's literally no Honda on UK Blu-ray! |

Really excited about these latest announcements. At least 4 of them are day one purchases.
Can't wait to get my hands on that Jarman set. |
