Well, neither set is actually shrink-wrapped. But both releases are factory-sealed, with folded cellophane over both the case and the slip.

Damn, I almost thought that I would have received Céline and Julie Go Boating (1974) by now, but Zavvi just sent me a mail saying that they haven't even sent it yet. There goes at least another week of waiting. This is not so satisfying.

My German Concentration Camps Factual Survey arrived yesterday. It is a thing of beauty — I wasn't expecting the slip case and book at all.

Packaging may be a thing of beauty, but for the film itself - you cannot prepare yourself for it. One of my top 10 releases of the year easily.

I'm both very eager and very very nervous about watching it to be honest.

I watched it early on Sunday morning, before the girlfriend was up. Obviously, a very difficult watch, but highly rewarding, if that’s the right word. I’ve seen a lot of documentaries about the camps over the years, but this one has something unique to offer in its immediacy and forthrightness.

Find the right time for you.

BFI just confirmed they'll be releasing Ingmar Bergman's THE TOUCH (1971) in the new year: https://twitter.com/BFI/status/935508087150206976

Was gonna bring it up elsewhere, but surely 2018 is the year of Bergman (centenary of his birth). Reckon all labels will be looking to release any of his films on Blu-ray - will it be Criterion, Artificial Eye, Arrow or Eureka who will get to them first? Or do Tartan still hold the rights to a lot of them?

I know Fabulous Films are inexplicably releasing a DVD set, but I assume those aren't exclusive licenses (there are a lot of titles and they'd be stupid to skip HD masters).

I actually thought I'd never get to see The Touch. Great news.

Tartan are releasing a massive box set next week.

Criterion also have major plans (at least for the US).

Frustrating if Tartan are hanging onto the rights for these without wanting to release any more on Blu-ray (all but The Seventh Seal). I have a couple on DVD but would love to upgrade them. I suppose the answer is to just have to go Region Free.

As long as any HD version of Fanny and Alexander remains unavailable in the UK - the exemplary Criterion edition in the US is now over six years old - then what Tartan gets up to on DVD here constitutes no kind of progress.

2018 will be the 50th anniversary of Tony Richardson's 'The Charge Of The Light Brigade'. I'm wondering whether BFI might release a restoration of the uncut version of this great and criminally underrated film on Blu-ray. The existing BD releases are of the cut version and are technically disappointing anyway.

What are the chances of this?

Quite slim I would have thought, sadly. They had their chance to produce a definitive edition when they released their now OOP DVD in 2004 and muffed it. They hold an absolute treasure trove of materials in their vaults (deleted scenes, etc.), but AFAIK the UK home video rights are still in the hands of Studio Canal.

I sincerely hope I'm wrong.

Pretty low, I'd have thought: even though the BFI reportedly have all the deleted footage from the rough cut, including all the Laurence Harvey scenes, and released the uncut version on VHS they didn't even bother to dip into any of it for their DVD release, and the animal cruelty issues would mean inevitable censor cuts.

It would be great to see a proper restoration, but I'd have thought after Criterion's Tom Jones (another Woodfall film) they'd have been more likely if anyone were to put some effort into it.
