I'd take those DVD cases over BFI's thin cardboard boxes that always get dented in mail. Did the book look good?

I think the packaging is very nice

HMV had one copy that nobody had noticed on their shelf. Duly snapped up and now possessed by myself. Paid for with Pure HMV Points too which was very gratifying.

So just to confirm. It physically exists.

i find it odd that amazon.uk is refusing to price match HMV when usually they tend to
their price is even higher then the store of the company that puts the film out

Are you sure that Pandora's Box isn't based on the current restoration? As far as I know it was restored in 2009 and digitised in 2013.

July/August seems a bit optimistic to me. But I wouldn't mind if they packed a nice Pabst boxset with some more films that are available digitally: Die Liebe der Jeanne Ney 1927, Abwege 1928, Du haut en bas 1933. And then there is also his very last film Durch die Wälder, durch die Auen 1956. That's a big gap to bridge, but at least the 3 silent films would make a nice set.

From the BFI site:

Quote:
New 2K DCP of Munich Film Museum’s definitive 1997 restoration, with orchestra score
http://www.bfi.org.uk/whats-on/bfi-f...s/pandoras-box

Not really sure what's going on. The BFI previously screened the later restoration here a few years ago....

I screened Pandora’s Box in 2012, and we were sent a 35mm print in pretty bad shape from the BFI. It was missing a sound track too, so, on the advice of someone who knows about these things, we made a score using a bunch of Kraftwerk’s more atmospheric tracks (apparently this suggestion was based on advice given on the back of an early German VHS!).

Re- the Jarman set. Packaging doesn’t really bother me in general, but I can’t help but think “what a shame!” when seeing that. It could have been an all-timer, but it looks half-baked.

Maybe we will get two editions of Pandora's Box from different labels, the definitive 1997 Munich restoration and the definitive 2009 Berlin restoration.

I guess the good thing here, with the cinema screenings - if there is a subsequent blu ray follow up, we'll get a heads up of what to expect.

At this point I just want it on blu ray, desperately.

This one has an orchestral score by Peer Raben, so Kraftwerk will have to take a backseat this time around!

One from BFI and one from MoC - like Nosferatu and Birth of a Nation - yes please!

Incidentally, I asked Second Sight if they still held any rights to the movie as they put out the previous DVD here (a long time ago) - this was at the back end of last year - the answer went along the lines of "it wasn't on their 2018 roster but they'd possibly consider it beyond that" - I got the impression I was being fobbed off, so I'd still think that Eureka and BFI are the best bets.

What is 'half baked' about it ? The slimline space saving disc cases ?

I don't mind the shelf space saving. Will you be comforted by the release of the two full size BR cases from the set being released in June/July from the set ?

Seems that BFI are doing what they did with the Alan Clarke set (with slightly bigger slim cases) by releasing two standalone titles from the set.

Exactly my impression too. of course it's the content that's important but the blue topped cases are ugly for such a prestige and unique release. Those criterion style cases would've been nicer or even slim digi packs but the set looks cheaply assembled for such titles and price ticket. Half baked is a perfect assessment I believe. I go to Japan a lot and department stores gift wrap your homewares with more care than this.

There’s no need to be like that. Like I say, it’s a shame that what should have been a premium box-set has turned out like this. Compared to the Indicator sets or the new-style Artificial Eye box-sets, all of which are lower priced, this just looks cheap.

Regarding this being some kind of space-saving blessing (a concern I haven’t seen you raise when it comes to other box-sets, such as those from
Indicator, btw), there are other ways to save space, if that’s what they’re going for, with digipacks being the obvious one.

I picked up a copy in Fopp last night (having cancelled an order with Zavvi, where it hadn't even entered the dispatch process) and can only report that it's a lot plainer and less distinctive than the originally depicted artwork had led me to expect. Rather bog standard, in fact.

Yes, that’s how I’m feeling too. In the mock-ups it looked amazing.
