I wonder if it’s only a few copies and that’s it? Or they’re listing store stock on the website?

In the UK, sadly no. I’d guess at Studio Canal or ITV (do they actually still release anything?). In the US I’m sure it’ll be Criterion. HTH!

Yeah, I posted it a month or two ago, but you couldn't add it to the basket. Of course, now that it's available, I'm completely broke.

I should have checked HMV again before I paid eBay prices

So today I’m regretting getting this and also Moonrise Kingdom for £18 when it’s now on eBay for £10

I suppose you’re always limited by what you know and what’s available for a certain price from where. For example I thought I had a major steal when I spent £23 on Hollywood Boulevard (I suppose I did with the lack of international shipping costs), but it’s still available from Screen Archives for $25.

What can you do, you win some, you lose some. Either way, you end up with some nice films.

All I can think is that they uncovered some during the time they closed their physical stores. It was still on base until recently. Spotted it on HMV so posted it to help someone out.

Glad someone cleared that up. I personally am not at all 'worried' at the amount of Japanese film being released by BFI, in fact quite the opposite - I'm very, very happy. The Kore-eda set, Funeral Parade of Roses, the two Ozu titles and Kitano were immediate pre-orders from me. As I've said before it's a bit of a shame we've not had any more Kurosawa upgrades from them (nor Naruse, or Teshigahara) but I can't complain too much when they're releasing stuff other labels are neglecting (presumably due to licensing costs or just lack of availability for their producers). We already heard from Third Window that they had trouble with the Kitano titles for example, but BFI have kindly strolled in and filled those gaps for us UK collectors, and I expect they will do a solid job too (as they did for the Kore-eda set).

Don't get me wrong, I'm still hugely grateful for BFI for resurrecting countless examples of British cinema through the ages, but I also think they do a stand-up job of importing a wide variety of cinema from abroad. As well as effectively being on a par with Criterion and MoC in terms of consistency, they're perhaps actually the best label at spreading a wide net and offering hundreds of different approaches to the medium, and therefore more power to 'em!

PS: Just like to remind some of the previous commenters that BFI once released a Lino Brocka double-bill which went largely under-the-radar and shows they do try when they can to offer harder-to-find Asian cinema, not just Japanese stuff.

I ordered this at least 8 months back when it was out of stock but for some reason they cancelled my order in March - if they held off for 2 more months I’d have gotten this bad boy, damn you HMV.

Film is International

If I look at what I have of BFI releases, I see:

Penny Points to Paradise / Let's Go Crazy
The Edge of the World
Institute Benjamenta; or, This Dream People Call Human Life
Underground
A Zed and Two Noughts
Is Your Honeymoon Really Necessary / My Wife's Lodger
The Belly of an Architect
Privilege
Gaslight
That Sinking Feeling
The Day the Earth Caught Fire
Farewell My Concubine
Shooting Stars
Culloden / The War Game
Napoleon
It Happened Here
Of Flesh and Blood: The Cinema of Hirokazu Koreeda
A Kid for Two Farthings

Aside from Napoleon, Farewell, My Concubine, and the Hirokazu set, all of those are British films. And I haven't scratched the surface.

There are also their British TV releases on DVD.

The German Pidax blu looks very good. At the beginning it mentions that it is a BFI restoration

The BFI restore films that they don't have the rights to distribute, see the Hitchcock silent films as another example. Oliver Twist is with ITV.
