well the releases from Japan aren't supposed to be very good from what many people have said, so it makes more sense to just wait until they can be done correctly. If the original materials aren't being made available for restoration or improvement, the bds will be based on older masters anyway.
who knows what is going on with these iconic films. we all know that film restoration isn't a very high priority these days in most cases.
the key is what is the source of these new dvds?

Each company seems to have their own priorities on releases...

Kino is belting out the Keaton films, BFI is releasing all the Ozus and I think Crtiterion will eventually release any/all Kurosawas on blu...if the source materials are adequate. I'll bet that any Kurosawa that is NOT an Eclipse set film will get the blu treatment.

I've only seen screencaps of the Seven Samurai release but, moving away from Japan, Criterion have released Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, High and Low and Kagemusha on Blu-Ray and they look damn good so there are good prints out there.

How come there's so many posts on DVD-only releases on a Blu-ray forum? Unless I'm missing something, the Kurosawa's definately aren't coming out on Blu-ray are they?

Speculation about future releases on blu-ray...an interest in a particular film/director...nothing else to talk about?

It was slated for last October so it must be something major to be delayed for over a year.

As a quick heads-up those two Kurosawa DVD boxsets are around £12 on Zavvi. Might be a mis-price but could be honoured. Having never seen any of his films I instantly pre-ordered for that price

Seven Samurai was scheduled for September 2009, then postponed, then scheduled for September 2010 and postponed again.

I don't know if this means anything but last November there was a screening of Seven Samurai in Tallinn. It was suposed to be a new digital restoration but due to licensing problems, old BFI 35mm film print was screened instead.

Amazon probably has priority over hmv when it comes to filling stock. I'm glad it is moving this week instead. Now I will have it in time to watch next weekend.

Mine arrived yesterday also. Transit was very quick. It shipped on Wednesday and made it to Los Angeles on Monday. It's on the top of my stack to watch this weekend.

This post from rockysds on the Criterion forum might give an indication of the next releases :

THANKS as always for your input charnier!

Those are both silent films...I would guess that if they are part on the next Ozu releases, that they would be the "supplementary" films that would accompany the "main features".

Hmmmm...I wonder what the other two films will be...that is based on BFI's track record of (2) BDs/DVDs being released at the same time.

I would love The End of Summer and Floating Weeds on BD, but I'm not sure those are Shochiku productions.
