It doesn't make any difference...BFI is supposed to be releasing all of the existing Ozu films by the end of 2012. That should include all Shochiku and Toho titles.

Would anyone recommend More? Reviews are pretty mixed, with some saying it's only worth watching if you're a big Pink Floyd fan.

Thanks Yami!

I would have no problem with a couple of silent Ozu releases coming out next...I've held off on ANY Criterion Ozu purchasing, as I'd rather get as many of these on blu as possible (I held off on the "Silent Ozu" Eclipse set) and BFI seems quite serious about not only releasing all of his existing films, but getting it done fairly quickly. Criterion has yet to release ANY of his films on blu, as of yet.

"More" is a good soundtrack album and I'll likely pick up the BFI BD when money is better...I already own "The Valley" and it's an interesting film.

Just received Humphrey Jennings Vol 1 and The Soviet Influence: From Turksib to Night Mail BFI Blu's.
Fascinating collection of documentaries and as pieces of social history absolutely recommended.
The sources differ in quality with some suffering badly from damage and aging but it is amazing considering their age how well they have been preserved.
Awesome additions to the BFI range and I will be definitely looking out for future documentary releases.

When money is not so tight...I'd like to get the Jennings BD. Supposedly a big influence on Lindsay Anderson...as well as other UK directors, I would assume.

ANNOUNCEMENT:

Quote:
Launched in May 2009, the BFI’s Flipside label has dedicated itself to unveiling the hidden history of British cinema, drawing upon materials preserved by the BFI National Archive and releasing them on both DVD and Blu-ray discs.

To date, Flipside has published over 60 films (features and shorts) and has met with universal acclaim, gathering a number of high profile admirers along the way including the award-winning film directors Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) and Ben Wheatley (Kill List).

On 24 October, the first nine Flipside titles will be reissued as Dual Format Editions (each containing DVD and Blu-ray versions), bringing them in line the rest of the collection.

Did the re-encoded An Autumn Afternoon disc made it to stores, or is it only available through BFI?

Is there any way to tell between the 2 discs?

I recently picked up this release on Amazon, so I'm curious to know if the disc I received is the new disc or not, especially since the plastic used to seal it was different from the one BFI usually uses (indicating it might have been previously opened).

Play the disc, bring up the display screen and see how many megabytes per second the disc is playing at - if it's 13 or so then it's wrong; if it's 23 or 24, then it's the replacement disc.

Precisely.
Otherwise, they look, as said above, absolutely identical.
I even mismatched them somehow, and had to use the above method to find back which was what.

I have read that Hammer intends to restore cuts in the final disintegration sequence of Dracula /Horror of Dracula that were excised from the British version showing the dissolving Christopher Lee which were used in the Japanese version of the movie but not in the British/American prints! The sequence has been discovered intact in Japan thank goodness! Hopefully these will be in the BFI release?

if you have a bly ray player on your computer, rund BDinfo and see what size the disc is. The re-encode is about 22-23 GB, the original is 13-14GB.

From yesterday:
https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=7469

Quote:
Following the U.S. announcement for Pier Paolo Pasolini's (Salo, or The 120 Days of Sodom) Medea (1967), the BFI have revealed that they will also release the film as a Dual Format Edition in the UK. Exact technical specs and region coding status for this release are unknown at the moment, but the preliminary release date set by the distributor is December 5th.

Based on the Greek classic by Euripides, Pasolini's Medea tells the tale of Jason, the leader of the invincible army, and his quest for the Golden Fleece. Meeting the priestess of the Flees, Medea (Callas), Jason falls in love with her and takes her home as she sacrifices everything to be with him, including dismembering her own brother. Years later he spurns her for a new love, the young and beautiful Glauce. Medea, using her witch-craft powers, exacts a terrible revenge upon Jason leading to a terrifying climax where loyalty and betrayal are tried before the altar of human sacrifice. Opera legend Maria Callas stars in her only dramatic film role ever. Restored and re-mastered from a new 35mm film-to-tape transfer.
