I think you've found the sensible middle ground here.

we've gotten almost forgotten bbc plays and series, trains, public information films along with obscure british classics--all i'm so glad to have.

is there a chance/market for food programmes as well?

mireille johnston's a cook's tour of france, madhur jaffrey's flavours of india, even stuff like keith lloyd in spain, france, and italy.

i watch the occasional episode on youtube in terrible quality, they'd make great sets imo with the combination of food and travel, in a snapshot of their respective times.

a cook's tour of france is particularly well made, but perhaps many blu collectors aren't interested in this kind of thing lol

It’s a gender thing.

The BBC and others believe it’s women who watch cooking shows and as we all know women don’t buy BDs as seen when studios decide which films go to UHD, BD or DVD.

The market almost certainly isn’t there to make BDs economic. You should feel lucky when they make it to DVD

Hope you appreciate the smilies. Also comes down to what they think will sell and it what numbers.

Is all this stuff shot on film? I recall seeing episodes of Floyd in the 90's and thought they were shot or at least edietd on video.

I own so many BFIs and other discs that fall under “random curiosity” or “moment in history” including Flipside, COI, British Transport, etc. I’m a sucker for those sets and would love to have Alton Brown’s gonzo “Good Eats” on Blu-Ray or even the original run of Iron Chef. Someone should start a food-oriented boutique label with outstanding graphic design and inserts (recipes, essays by food historians, etc).
I'm not a woman and not much of a cook, but back in the 90's after I canceled my cable subscription in Los Angeles over a huge dispute, I was left with only broadcast channels. I remember getting hooked on a Public Television daily food series hosted by Chef Jacques Pepin and his daughter and I wound up loving it. No, I didn't learn how to cook and I never tried any of the recipes they so masterfully executed on the show, but I found the entire experience to just be so warm and contentedly fascinating, I completely fell under the spell of watching the art of cooking. I recently picked up an old Vincent Price cookbook and am really enjoying it, reminding me of when he would do engaging cooking segments during talk show appearances when I was a kid.

I realize there are entire networks devoted to these things now and chefs are just one more whozit on the perpetual conveyor belt of "superstars" , but that's not really for me. I do, however, think that compiling some of the vintage cooking programs on Blu would be an interesting idea and as someone who is always on the lookout for learning and stuffing my imagination with all sorts of new stuffing, I would probably enjoy it.

This is what I've been thinking for a good while, now. There are a few specialist labels, one with a focus on food & travel and maybe other things like design and fashion would be nice--though now that's a pipe dream in today's climate. Perhaps BFI could test the waters

The idea of recipes and essays is really good.

The earlier ones are are--A Cook's Tour of France definitely is and it'd look pretty good even with a half-arsed restoration. Throw in some designs inspired by the Milton Glaser artwork he did for her books, et voila

(if anyone's interested, this and Cuisine of the Sun have great recipes lol)

There have been some food docs on blu - Jiro Dreams of Sushi, Deli Man - but it's probably found its real home in streaming. I imagine food shows attract a fair audience, especially now when a lot of people are stuck at home.

MOGUL MOWGLI follows the story of Zed (Riz Ahmed), a British Pakistani rapper, who, on the cusp of his first world tour, is struck down by an illness that threatens to derail his big break and forces him to face his past, his family, and the uncertainty of his legacy.

Stuart Brown, BFI Head of Programme and Acquisitions says: “MOGUL MOWGLI is a rare thing. Every now and then a piece of art will feel like a jolt. Bassam Tariq and Riz Ahmed have achieved that with this film, it’s electrifying. We love how urgent it feels and how layered it is; it’s raw and sophisticated at the same time. Riz’s performance is mesmerising, magnetic – his best ever. We can’t wait to bring this film to audiences in the UK.”
This isn’t playing at my local ODEON or Vue, I guess because screens are taken up with The Craft: Legacy and Pixie. What a shame!

Pretty decent offer on BFI blu’s at hmv tomorrow. Lots of newish titles as opposed to the trade wide criterion offer. Some at £6.99, some at £9.99.
Bait, the Flavour of Green Tea (Ozu), Maborosi , Sunday Bloody Sunday to name but a few.
Fopp kick off a comprehensive BFI & Artificial Eye offer also tomorrow.

Titles are going out of stock by the second but I've managed to place an order at least.

Went for

Funeral Parade of Roses
Room at the Top
The Battle of the Sexes
Women in Love
Flavour of Green Tea Over Rice (£6.99 for this is a bargain)
An Actor's Revenge

It's a shame the new Tokyo Story release isn't part of the deal and it seems odd that they're still selling the old one.
