The release of Volume 2 is scheduled for six months after Volume 1 so hopefully the plan is for these to come out twice a year.

Sounds a bit unreasonable on my part but these sets look so nice they could've just done one big box set. Perhaps they decided to do 'volumes' after the Jarman one, and seeing Indicator successfully sustain excitement across several 'volumes'.

All in for Jungle Fever, Country Lines is likely a day one pick up.

Radio On sounds pretty great, and Friendship’s Death and Maeve sound pretty interesting.

Maeve is the highlight here for me and I'm excited for more people to discover it. It is one of the greatest films about the Troubles and the only film that I am aware of that approaches the then-political situation in Northern Ireland from a female (and, indeed, feminist) perspective. The way that it deals with the memories of the main character, returning home to Belfast from London, prefigures the later works of Terence Davies.

I think it’s better to give smaller volumes if someone is only after 1 or 2 plays, to make it accessible to newer viewers and impulse buyers (Dissent and Disruption at £150 odd took about 4 years to sell through), to judge sales to see how successful later volumes will be, and to train people to be repeat customers with the BFI, to give some mileage to it and not make the workload too heavy for them. Plus we know these sets aren’t chronological but more ‘best ofs’.

Wow! Maeve is being released.

I didn't realise that - I'm so pleased. I haven't seen it is decades and would love to revisit it. Highly recommended.

The American release of jungle Fever had stellar AV, but no extras. Hopefully Bfi can improve In that department

If anyone still collects the DVD releases, a post in the BFI Facebook group has alerted me to the fact Bee-Entertained on Amazon Marketplace has the OOP DVD of Nicholas Ray’s Bigger than Life for £7.99.

While the Criterion has 80 minutes in video extras, including a 1977 Profile of Nicholas Ray, and a Geoff Andrew commentary too, the BFI extras are still strong and more than half the price

Quote:
Audio commentary by Edward Buscombe
New filmed conversation about the film and Nicholas Ray between Jim Jarmusch and Jonathan Rosenbaum (26:32)
Extracts from a 1969 interview with Nicholas Ray (8:36)

Gotta love a 50s movie where the respectable suburban drug-addicted hero pronounces "God was wrong!" as he prepares to sacrifice his son with a pair of scissors.

That last one is one of the few dvd's still on my wishlist on Amazon. BFI and other publishers should release some more films by Anthony Asquith on blu-ray.

PICADILLY looks like it is scheduled for June.

I've been waiting for that one, so very looking forward to it.

Sadly, it's gonna have the same score as the dvd, which has some detractors. I agree with them. Just sampled a bit on youtube: thick layer of modern jazz that takes you out of the movie. Been there before with other silents. So, for me it's gonna be another silent to watch in, err, silence No biggie.

Tell England desperately needs a release. The public school/golden youth stuff in the first half hour is pretty poor and horribly dated, but once it gets to the Dardanelles it's astonishingly grim and powerful. There's a poor copy online but it deserves some TLC and to be rediscovered.

For the "Marlene Dietrich at Universal 1940-1942" set just watched Seven Sinners which was a fun film. BFI made no claim that the films have been restored, and this film has quite a lot of damage on display. Otherwise the packaging is as good as Indicator.

One of the greatest British directors in my opinion, he's been reasonably well represented on blu-ray but there's definitely a lot more that could be put out, The Browning Version is one of my all time favourite films and I'm hoping Criterion will upgrade their DVD.

I ordered the following from the HMV sale, that were OOS, when the titles were £5.99. The other 2 titles in the order were dispatched Saturday.

1) Legendof the Witches / Secret Rites
2) Cyrano De bergerac
3) Room at the Top

Does anyone know what the following means & will I still recieve these 3 items, above, or not?

Authorised - Next to the first two titles above which are still OOS
Payment captured - Next to the bottom one which is now back in stock
