Tbf, the BFI’s last cinema releases have been quite limited (though Little Joe, Bait, La haine have played in ODEON before), although the Truffaut season did hit quite a few indies and belatedly in Picturehouse only this month. But I think the name value of Michael Caine would make it a surefire choice for the chains, even if only a one off, but it can be hard to predict. I’m okay not seeing it in the cinema as I know I’ll get the disc, but seeing the restoration a few months early on the big screen will surely be a delight if I’m able to.

I won't be able to watch my copy for some time - I'm currently between 4K TVs because of a move - but very much looking forward to a revisit via UHD. John Hillcoat is a master Director (and storyteller) - shame he's not held in higher esteem in the US.

Will this be sourced from a newer master than Criterion's blu-ray? The CC disc is, admittedly, already quite good.

Your situation underscores my feelings about the release. I am generally keen to get 4K releases when faced with a choice of one or the other but I do wish they had a single dual-format edition as was common in the transition from dvd to blu ray. I only have two 4K players and only one of these is connected to a 4K screen. I'd like the versatility of having a single release pack usable in every room in the house with a screen. It's especially galling in that they could I'm sure easily put the movie and extras on a single blu ray without compromise given the extra are upscaled (the making of is ARC converted to anamorphic 16:9 and looks atrocious, particularly on the stills inserted throughout) or merely SD at 4:3. This should've been a single sku release of BD/UHD with movie and new extras on UHD and movie and SD extras from Tartan on the Blu. Comparing my old dvd, the content is the same but carved up differently and the dvd version of the Making Of actually looks better as it's not converted to full frame 16:9 so the inherent flaws are less obvious.

This makes me happy. I wonder if a boxset is imminent?

Do you know what films they will be showing?

Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne, A Man Escaped, The Trial of Joan of Arc, Au hasard Balthazar and Mouchette are those that have been announced so far.

The Trial of Joan of Arc really deserves an English friendly upgrade from the DVD.

Some of the titles mentioned are Curzon or Criterion so doubt there will be a boxset.

There won't be a box set, the Southbank does retrospectives regularly. But they might release Pickpocket as they're releasing that one wider. And I don't know why Angels of Sin has never been released on DVD outside of France so it would be nice to see that one

Both the Criterion and the new BFI come from a 2K restoration. I believe the Artificial Eye Blu-ray was also the same as it looks identical to the Criterion in the DVDBeaver comparison.
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film4/blu-r...im_blu-ray.htm

The new BFI basically looks the same and doesn't have any indication of being a newer transfer.

How quick is the BFI Store generally when it comes to shipping?

That's a shame. With the exception of The Trial Of Joan Of Arc, all are available on blu ray. Oh well.

There could well be more though, 5 films is small for a bfi season

For in stock items, I've had dispatch between 1-2 working days after I've placed my order.

For pre-orders, recent ones (since pandemic) are dispatched in release week and usually arrive the Wed or Thurs after release.

Hmm, ordered vol.1 of Play For Today on Monday and I haven't even had a dispatch notice yet, and was definitely in stock at the time. Maybe they got swamped with Easter sale orders?
