I’ve seen some mixed things about the documentary, as apparently it focuses very heavily on Menkes’ own films over other directors, and illustrates its argument about the ‘male gaze’ by using clips from Titane (a film directed by a woman!)

Already have the Second Sight release of Gregory's Girl but can't wait to get my hands on the isolated score!

"Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power reveals the framework of misogyny and paternalism that, from early cinema to the present day, infiltrates some of our favourite movies."

No love for this one unsurprisingly.

I'm not expecting it to click with my own conception of feminism, but I'm willing to give it a watch and see what it has to say, I'll be happy to get it with Gothic and Gallivant.
I like the fact that this film seems to be quite divisive, it's exciting, however I have previously purchased the Mark Cousins directed Women make Film that was also put out by the BFI, and it turned out to be one of the worst documentaries I've ever seen so...

Sounds like par for the course for BFI. I can't imagine this stuff actually sells, but its messaging is very on-brand for their new agenda.

Of more concern, perhaps, is the misanthropy contained within the BFI's synopsis. Why are they our favourite movies if they contain such misogyny and paternalism?

The short answer is that a movie can have any number of problematic elements and still be a good (even a great) film, being critical about something doesn't mean it has to be thrown out entirely

For some reason I can't quite explain, I always found Cousins' articles in S&S somewhat irritating, so was disappointed that something like Women make Film wasn't helmed by a woman film-maker. It will be nice to see Gallivant again; I wonder if the BFI could also look at giving the BD treatment to some Patrick Keiller films.

It's a subject I'd be interested in seeing a good documentary about but most of the reviews I've seen suggest that this isn't that. Sounds like Menkes cherry picks her clips and ignores context, and has a far higher opinion of her own work than that of others.

What's wrong with it? I was considering getting it.

As for the other documentary, sure, I'll watch it, although I'll wait for a good discount, as I often do with BFi releases. "Other reviews" usually don't figure much into my enjoyment of something, as I prefer to make my own judgment.

I’ve ordered Targets. Chuffed that it’s finally getting a decent release on blu-ray. I have an old DVD-R with the Bogdanovich special features but the disc sticks and freezes so I’m really looking forward to watching the film and extras in September.
