There Was a Father has already had an HD release from BFI (included as an extra on their release of Equinox Flower). Will it really be a "newly restored" transfer as the blurb suggests or is that just cut and pasted from the Equinox Flower blurb, do you think?

There Was a Father was restored in 4K last year. I'm sure the BFI won't be using the old master.

Might have to upgrade. There Was a Father is a top tier Ozu film and as per, emotionally devestating.

Yep, they're from the new restorations. The page also says they're newly remastered:

I didn't see anything essential in the new releases, then I saw Floating Clouds

Thanks but just a little late in my case. Only two days ago I bought the Artificial Eye DVD release which of course I wouldn't have bothered with had I known. I did do a quick search first for HD releases on this site but there's no entry for the BFI as yet.

Great announcements. Naruse is back! Just when I downloaded almost 50 of his films, thinking that I won't have an opportunity to get official releases anytime soon. Granted, just Floating Clouds, but it's a start. I hope people buy it so that we can get more.

Delighted to see more Denis getting spruced up and released in the UK; I've been picking up a few from overseas releases. It would be nice if the BFI followed up with 35 Shots Of Rum as, while the Cinema Guild region A is available on amazon UK, I'm a little nervous about whether I'd end up being sent one of the problematic disks.

Yes good to see but Denis isn't thin on the ground. I have five releases without even trying; Beau travail, White Material, Bastards, Let the Sunshine In and High Life. Wish I could say the same for UK releases by my favourite filmmaker Bertrand Blier. It's null point for Blier UK HD.

Hopefullh they manage to get at least one MIA Denis as extras on the Chocolat disc - US Go Home would be the holy grail but it would be great to own Le mai 15, Keep It for Yourself, and/or The Hoop Skirt

Criterion have the rights to Chocolat in the US. I don't imagine they'll release it on 4K, but figured I'd mention it here.

I was born but… had a standard def release as an extra on Good Morning- I wonder if we will see upgrades to other Ozu films which have only had a dvd release from the bfi?
I may be wrong, but…

I'm slightly surprised The Film Desk hasn't been one of Radiance's hosted labels yet, especially considering the link they have with Craig Keller across the two labels. Maybe it's more complicated than that!

I think Altitude might have the UK rights for Trouble Every Day, so Radiance could enquire and maybe this could happen one day? Alternatively, I could see Second Sight releasing it as they're tight with Altitude now.

PS: If we got The Film Desk titles through Radiance, I could also see them going for Resnais' The War is Over as well...and maybe even help distribute some of their books here too (Godard, Cocteau, Jia, Kiarostami etc).

No. We won't. The campaign to prevent that was succesful and they didn't even have to say anything.

Just remembered Lightning was on Radiance's 'Failed Licenses 2023' list, so they were trying to get some as well (that one was via Kadokawa-Daiei, whereas Floating Clouds is Toho).

I wonder if BFI were successful getting anything else from Toho at the same time...namely some Kurosawa?

Next year will be the 120th anniversary of Naruse's birth so, while I wouldn't expect quite the level of promotion as Ozu 120 last year, I'd hope for some restorations to come out as a result of that.
