Brilliant film. I can't quite come to terms with the fact La Haine is 30 years old. I remember when the film came out, I think it was shown on BBC 2 or something, or maybe Mark Kermode did a piece on it, I forget.

I just recall in 1995 I was rushing to buy this on VHS in a fancy shoebox-style limited edition. I later bought the soundtrack on CD though both the CD and VHS I've lost to the sands of time. I'll have to get the 4K. Does it come with Métisse like the VHS (and the soundtrack CD for that matter) did?

30 years...bloody hell.

Finalized extras are up for Eclipse (Flipside #51)

https://shop.bfi.org.uk/eclipse-flip...1-blu-ray.html

  • Relative Strangers: The Chalk Mark (1988, 24 mins) and Marooned (1994, 21 mins): two stylish short films that enigmatically echo the disjointed relationships central to Eclipse
  • Not Waving, Drowning: Joe and Petunia: Coastguard (1968, 2 mins); Charley Says: Falling in the Water (1973, 1 min); Lonely Water (1973, 1 min): three haunting water-safety Public Information Films eerily adjacent to the psychogeographic headspace of the main feature

[Show spoiler]
I'm not sure if carrying that around in public does not constitute some form of provocation to hatred / violence, at least to folks ignorant of the film. But even that apart, it's a surprisingly insensitive bit of consumerism culture from the BFI.

Huh? Guns don't kill people tote bags do? While we're at it we should also ban the bible for it's similar proclamation that the meek shall inherit the Earth, I guess.

I've never watched the film, and I fail to see what's provocative about that. Sounds like a typically vapid lifestyle statement.

I’ve seen the film four times. I can’t remember where that line is used and I can’t see anything provocative about it either.

I can't remember in the context of La Haine but I imagine it's from the characters' fascination with gangster culture and specifically Scarface, where it appears on a blimp. In that context I think it is intended to show the underclass characters buying into the American/capitalist dream of consumerism via criminal activity rather than more socially acceptable means.

Either way I can't see a riot breaking out on the Southbank because someone's come out of the BFI wearing a tote with that on.

I've watched La haine countless times. It's a movie that was very important to us growing up (born 1985).

The BFI bag is regarded to this scene:

Le monde est a vous = the world is yours
Le monde est a nous = the world is ours

The text on the tote should have been French if anything, and crossing out the V for the N too. That's maximum hipster. BFI are only going half-hipster here.

Full hipster would have been having the tote bag modelled by a gangly knobhead on a Penny Farthing, wearing a plaid shirt and bollock-strangling denim, sporting a beard the size of a Rhododendron bush and armed with a Crossley portable turntable under one arm and a selection of Maria McKee records discreetly tucked under the other.

Massive fail by BFI there.
