Treating it as an introduction to Akerman's work, and if I like what I see I'll definitely be picking up the second volume too.
I am assuming these won't get any individual releases?

When is the second Akerman set due to be released? June?

Anyway, this set is superb in every respect and a shining example of what packaging for a box set should be like.

As Rapta has already said above "Very shelf friendly".

Jeanne Dielman obviously will, not sure about the others (maybe News from Home)? But definitely not all of them, no.

Unless the set sold out before release date, in which case they may consider a standard edition reissue of the whole set, with no book (as they ended up doing for the Koreeda set, for example).

Maybe it's just me, but it seems kinda dumb that BFI used the same pic of Chantal that Criterion did for their set. Anyone know if Criterion is planning on putting out a second volume like BFI?

Probably not. I think they only have a couple of the later films, so, if anything, they are more likely to do solo releases of Golden Eighties and/or Tout une nuit.

Thanks for the info. I'm planning to grab both BFI sets

I've bolded what I think are unique to each release (I only did a quick check). Note the Criterion is only a 3-disc set while BFI is 5-disc which may give the films a bit more room to breathe.

Criterion: Link

Quote:
  • New program on Akerman featuring critic B. Ruby Rich
  • New visual essay on Akerman featuring archival interviews
  • Autour de “Jeanne Dielman,” a documentary made during the filming of Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, shot by actor Sami Frey and edited by Agnčs Ravez and Akerman
  • Interviews with Akerman, cinematographer Babette Mangolte, actors Aurore Clément and Delphine Seyrig, and Akerman’s mother, Natalia
  • Appreciation by filmmaker Ira Sachs
  • PLUS: An essay and notes on the films by critic Beatrice Loayza
BFI: Link

Quote:
  • Audio commentaries on Saute ma ville and Je tu il elle by So Mayer and Selina Robertson of the queer feminist film curatorial collective Club des Femmes
  • Audio commentary on Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles by Kate Rennebohm and Simon Howell of the Akerman Year podcast
  • Audio commentary on Les Rendez-vous d’Anna by Kate Rennebohm
  • Chantal Akerman 1976: An Interview (1976, 59 mins): the filmmaker discusses her early films with B Ruby Rich
  • Autour de Jeanne Dielman (1975, 69 mins): insightful documentary by Sami Frey showing the working relationship between Akerman and Delphine Seyrig
  • Entretien avec ma mčre, Natalia Akerman (2007, 30 mins): Chantal Akerman talks to her mother, Natalia
  • Interviews with Babette Mangolte and Aurore Clément (2007, 53 mins total)
  • Leaving Home – New World Vision (2024, 14 mins): artist Sarah Wood meditates on News From Home in a newly commissioned video essay
  • 72-page perfect bound book featuring new essays by Lillian Crawford, Catherine Bray, Diana Cipriano, Justine Smith, Daniella Shreir, Pamela Hutchinson, Jerry White, Sarah Wood and Hannah Strong plus archive articles by Janet Bergstrom and Laura Mulvey
Mainly some additional commentaries on the BFI release vs an Ira Sachs appreciation on the Criterion, as well as the different booklet content.

It's possible the new visual essay is the same (not enough info on the Criterion page to validate).

In addition to being "different," the BFI booklet is quite a bit longer, no (though I suppose being longer does constitute difference—basically just seeking confirmation that it's longer lol)?

I can't speak for the Criterion video essay but there are no archival interviews in Sarah Wood's piece for the BFI.

My Yojimbo/Sanjuro 4K finally arrived from HMV today, I was starting to wonder if it had gone astray given it was posted before all the other things I received on Monday.
I've really been loving these releases as an excuse to revisit Kurosawa, and I really hope we get some upgrades to the old DVD sets of his 'lesser' works given how well the headliners are selling, and I really, really hope someone is trying to figure out how to bring us a Dersu Uzala restoration.

Definitely 👍 Have held off from importing the Imprint so far & perhaps isn’t a likely release from the bfi, but hopefully someone will release it in the UK (how long has it been since the artificial eye dvd went out of print?)

My Yojimbo/Sanjuro from HMV never showed. Landed at a Royal Mail sorting office on 15th and never moved so I picked it up from Amazon (with no 20% off ☹️). Can claim back from HMV from tomorrow. I have the Dersu Uzala from Imprint - picture not great.

I assume that Criterion has the UK rights to Dersu Uzala now, but it is known that they don't want to release the current master. So, who knows when it'll get released.

Just seen the Slade In Flame contents have been updated to include both the hour long Noddy interview from the 2002 DVD and the hour long making of with Loncraine and the whole band from the 2007 DVD. That's exactly what I wanted, thank you! Will help to water down the presence of you-know-who.

Please BFI, please give us releases of these titles, even if you have to squeeze most of them onto "Short Sharp Shocks" discs -- or at least, as you did with 1948's Death in the Hand, via BFI Player?:

Alf's Button (1930)
Colonel Bogey (1947)
Condemned to Death (1932)
Dark Interval (1950)
Dead Men Tell No Tales (1938)
Fatal Night (1948)
Her Paneled Door (Woman With No Name) 1950
Man They Couldn't Arrest (1931)
Melody in the Dark (1949)
