And on that basis, while they're not Flipside titles, The Good Die Young and The Guinea Pig are being deleted at the end of this month. It doesn't seem so long ago that they came out and I reviewed them both, but it was 2020.

I keep hoping to see PANIC! on one of these Short, Sharp Shock volumes.

I'm sure I read somewhere that it had been restored and I think it might have been shown at the BFI in the last few years but still no sign of it.

I also seem to remember hearing Paramount owned it so maybe it's a no-go. But as it's one of those short films that everyone in my generation remembers, this series won't feel complete without it.

Panic was shown at the BFI Southbank in 2012 as one of a triple bill of shorts. The other two were Twenty-Nine and The Lake, both of which have appeared on BFI releases. I don't know if Panic has been restored or not - if memory serves, the BFI showing was from a 35mm print.

You're right - Paramount own Panic so won't license it. The same applies to James Dearden's other short Diversion. Paramount didn't make that but they bought the rights to it so that they could make Fatal Attraction.

Red was originally released by 20th Century Fox and played in support of Damien Omen II. Presumably Fox no longer own it as I can't see Disney licensing this out, but that's what the BFI have been able to do.

Just a reminder, these two will be deleted from BFI's catalog at the end of the month:

Thanks for the info, I think that was what I was (mis)remembering.

Paramount are such arses. It's not like there's any other outlet for it.

Some guy actually made a short that ripped off Panic completely. I think it's on YouTube somewhere.

EDIT: Actually, here's the original - very dark but just about watchable. I'd forgotten this was the supporting film for FOUL PLAY in 1978.

The short film that blatantly ripped it off was called "LEFT TURN" and was directed (and "written" by) Sean Ellis. I guess his defence would be that it was somewhat based on an urban legend in the first place.

I watched The Good Die Young. Average movie, but has Gloria Grahame and generally a pretty good cast.

I ordered the other. Aside from the film, it has what looks like a superb set of extras. Be interesting to see if it comes with a booklet - would it have gone beyond an initial pressing?

The Good Die Young came with a booklet, but I bought it from the mythical BFI Shop.

The Good Die Young is a terrific British noir.

Since both those films were Romulus productions, expect a Studiocanal release at some point.

I'm totally stoked for Short Sharp Shocks Vol. 4, coming in late Oct. It'll include the long-AWOL (and fondly remembered by those who saw it as kids) The Fatal Night.

I'm a big fan of Ben Stoddart for getting this released.

I'm assuming with different/less extras than the BFI releases.

Yes, I expect so. A Kid for Two Farthings and Room at the Top were missing some of the BFI extras, but added some new ones (interviews, a Jack Clayton short film etc.).

BOTH Jack Clayton shorts were included on the BFI release of The Innocents.

I was a bit perplexed by it when I grabbed my copy of "The Hidden Fortress" 4K from the HMV shelf today, but it does not say it has a booklet inside, compared to previous releases. Although, it DOES in fact have a booklet.

I know it has happened before, I believe that "Sanjuro/Yojimbo" had the booklet mentioned on the back of the pack, but "Throne of Blood" didn't and "Hidden Fortress" doesn't either. So a bit inconsistent from BFI...

I wonder if they've stopped mentioning it to save them editing case art for 2nd print runs?

Ben Stoddart made this interesting comment when someone said there aren't any other known Kurosawa restorations that BFI could acquire:

From what I can tell, he’s been talking about a fairly recent 2K restoration of Red Beard, and probably will release it on Blu-ray (not 4K obviously), but has to enquire first and find out if it’s available from Toho. Fingers crossed, I’m sure we’ll get it eventually though!

I’m assuming Toho will be restoring as many Kurosawa titles as they can seeing as the rest went down so well globally.
