I recall some caps between the Toho Blu-ray and the Criterion (can't find them now!) that demonstrated they are worlds apart. The Japanese release looked awful (like upscaled DVD awful), so awful in fact that I don't believe for a second the BFI would replicate it for the U.K. market. So it'd be interesting to know exactly what the story behind this disc is.

Just finished reading La Belle et la Bete review of the French disc, which features the new restoration, and BFI should seriously consider upgrading this classic. I never liked the Criterion and the only two shots available for comparison (if we coud have a couple more...) shows exactly why. Grain structure on the CC is poor, dirt all over the place and detail too is nothing exceptional. Just a shame this release doesn't include Eng subs as well.

Any report on this would be greatly appreciated, as this is the first regionB release of the movie, it comes from the prestigious BFI and it's only available thorugh the Zavvi store. So it's kind of an oddity, and people are anxious to know how it measures in respect of the excellent Criterion release.
(a downside of steelbooks: at release, everyone is talking about package, not PQ) Last edited by Vakulinchuk; 10-27-2013 at 02:53 PM. |

Slightly off-topic, as they're DVDs, but does anyone know how much HMV are charging for Dead Of Night, Robin Redbreast and Classic Ghost Stories (all released today)? I know Fopp are selling each for £12, but I don't have a Fopp near me, so quite interested to see what HMV are charging.

Ooh, forgot about these releases. I'm mostly interested in 'Classic Ghost Stories for Christmas', but its £44 on Amazon (think it's cheaper at base.com).
Need to wait for next pay day... ![]() |

It's £44 for the original 5 disc set plus the new disc. If you have the previous set already, then you just need to get the single disc release |

OK, I got it and watched Tony Rayns' interesting interview (thumbs up), and the movie's first half up to the intermission.
From what I can see (on my puny 42", calibrated), and using Rikichi's close-up at the beginning (see dvdbeaver), I'd say this is a notch softer than Criterion, but leaps and bounds better than the Toho's 2009 waxy disc. I'm very happy with it and I hope BFI will upgrade more Kurosawa soon, just as they did with Ozu! ![]() |

A link now available at Amazon too.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seven-Samura...=seven+samurai That price at Ebay is incredible. I could really get this. But I prefer to wait for a comparison - the B&N CC sale is approaching, after all! ps. thanks for the comment! What about extras? Only the interview? |

There's the original trailer, the Tony Rayns interview which clocks just short of 50 minutes, and well... the ability to play the film with or without the intermission, I guess.
![]() There's also the booklet with essays from P. Kemp and a british review of the time. What else can I add... Tony Rayns rocks. ![]() |

Bummer. Amazon's just sent me an e.mail to say that Phantom of the Opera has been delayed. Now due for release in early December.
