Kndy,

I'll definitely put Les Demoiselles de Rochefort on my viewing list.

The BFI dvds that I want to see re-issued as Blus are as follows:

1. Ordet
2. Red Beard
3. Syndromes and a Century

If L'armee des Ombres was still in the hands of the BFI, then that would shoot straight to the top - as it is, if it was re-done for blu, it would probably be done by Optimum or SC for Region B, which means I would have to wait for Criterion to upgrade it to Blu and then get a region free player.

I wish BFI stopped with the dual-edition releases.
I'd like to buy some films but I'd hate having that DVD in the package.

Oh man...I told myself I wasn't going to get any of the BFI DVD's but with the current prices so low, I had to pick up "Lost World of Mitchell and Kenyon", "Silent Britain" and "Picadilly". If anyone has purchased RW Paul the Collected Films 1895-1908 and recommends it, please let me know.
I'd recommend all these...

No problem with any of those choices...

As I'm a colonist, I own the Criterion BDs of Red Desert and The Leopard.

I rented the DVD of Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (this past weekend, in fact) and enjoyed it quite a bit.

I've never seen Loving Memory and unfortunately, it's not listed on NetFlix.

I'll eventually add the SNASM BD to my collection, as I've got a multi-region player.

Hey Pro-B...what can you tell me about "Loving Memory"?

Part of the reason the BFI have dual-format releases is because they don't want to put non-HD material onto their BDs--apparently this is because they had heard of compatability issues with some players regarding PAL and HD content on the same disc . That's why the Ozu's are BD/DVD, because the "secondary" features were not good enough for 1080p and they did not want to put 576p material on the 1080p BD disc. Also, Institute Benjamenta apparently has a small featurette that did not upscale well on the DVD. So it isn't just about having both formats, it's about keeping PAL material off their HD media.

I just watched my copy of The Innocents last and it looked fabulous on blu; I'm still looking at the extras, but I really like the work they've done on this.

But there seems to be problems playing the disc on some players - LG, Phillips and some Sony models according to a post on criterionforum and apparently Amazon have now withdrawn it.

Re the dual-pack - ITA with Michael. I find it so much easier to view films on dvd than blu-ray - with blu, you've got to view it on a big screen set up (otherwise there's no point), whereas with dvds you can watch it pretty much anywhere. In fact, I'm loathe to buy too many blus as I suspect replay value will be poor and chances are, I will have watched the dvd part of the pack more than the blu.

Plus the dual format is a fantastic promotion tool for converting people to blu - they know that they have a superior disc in terms of PQ and AQ and one day curiosity or a feeling of inevitability might tip them over the edge and upgrade to blu. Also if some people are dvd fanatics, they can always gift the blu to somebody who does appreciate the format.

Plus you cannot blame the BFI for wanting to keep costs down - at least this way they don't have to spend extra on cases for separate dvd formats.

I really wish I could buy "The Innocents" from amazon.uk
It is in that "unavailable due to some order problems" status that amazon invokes every now and then, and has been for some time.
I mean wtf??
On a happier note, I got my Powell bfi bd and can't wait to check it out.

For those in the UK, a cool contest right now from the Guardian and Observer where you can win some BFI goodies and all films presented on this video. But can you name all 26 films?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIbAVFSBJJE

The Guardian and Observer Film Season (24 September 2010 – 22 October 2010) will help you get inside film with a month devoted to all things cinematic.

The BFI DVD that I'd jump at if it were released on Blu-ray is Pasolini's Teorema. That's a beautiful DVD and would look absolutely stunning on BD.

went ahead and ordered "The Innocents" from HMV.
have no idea why amazon is taking so long resolving whatever, but I can't wait anymore cause I have to watch this during October.
(that's when I watch all my horror movies each year)

I was thinking about picking this one up but I am hoping BFI releases this on Blu-ray:

Just a side note for those in the US, I bought "Silent Britain" ala BFI...but just realized that this was included on the KINO DVD release of "A Cottage on Dartmoor" (which I have but have yet to watch).
The BFI Young is on a par with all the other DVD releases (all taken from the same source), i.e. not good.

It's just been released on blu-ray in France in a spectacular new 2010 restoration that finally gets it all right. It took my breath away.

Does you have a link from where it can be purchased?

It doesn't look like Seven Samurai is coming out this month, can't find it for pre-order anywhere.

Seven Samurai is out in Region A from Criterion this month. The BFI BD is not coming until 2011.

That's disappointing, I'd been wondering why there had been no news since this

BFI budget to be cut by 15%

In response to the cut, Amanda Nevill, director of the BFI, said: "Over recent months we have carefully been looking at the best options to protect our staff and all key activities, but the reality is that the BFI will have to change shape and re-scale considerably over the next 12-18 months."

Do you mean this? It's region-free and English-subbed even for the extras.

There's a "Buy now" link to Amazon.fr on the page; Fnac.com do international or at least EU-wide shipping as well.
