How can it be a definitive list with 1.66:1 and 1.85:1 titles also on it? Those titles will give black bars on many TVs (as they should).

Right, but the black bars with 1.66:1 and 1.85:1 are rather small.

But they are nevertheless, visible black bars. But I don't care as long as I am seeing everything that was intended to be filmed. I have a solution for all those who want to fill their precious big screens. Most TV's have a zoom or stretch mode. It will distort everything , but well, now every inch of the screen will be full of picture. My widescreen TV is rather large and all black, so I don't even notice those black bars.
I don't even mind the black bars on the sides when I watch an old show or old movie. What I do mind is watching an old movie or TV show on TV and it is stretched to fill my screen. This is why I don't watch A&E or HISTORY CHANNEL. But that's a whole other story.
I like BLURAY the way it is. I hope they don't do what DVD's did and release movies in "fullscreen" or widescreen to fool people who have standard TV's into thinking that they are actually watching "the whole picture".

OAR FTW! If you have a 4:3 display the point becomes rather moot unless you are watching a movie that was filmed in 1.33:1 or 1.37:1 such as Gone with the Wind or Casablanca, but of course you'd be limited to 480p anyway.

Thumbs down

Is it just me or does anybody else get mad when a film shot natively in 1.85:1 gets released on Blu-ray in 1.78:1 . My latest two purchases were Beverly Hills Cop & the Lethal Weapon Collection (UK release), which LW1 & BHC are both 1.78:1 on Blu! I know on a 16:9 display the black bars top & bottom are only small when displaying 1.85:1 content, but I actually prefer to have the black bars, makes it feel a bit more film like to me. I always seem to relate content in 1.78:1 to be TV shows. I just wish studios (Paramount & WB in particular) would release Blu-rays with the proper AR.

Yeah, Warner and Paramount pull this kind of crap all the time. They even do it with new releases, which annoys me as well. The first one that comes to mind is Sherlock Holmes.

Ahh, yes I own that one too. I think it even stated on the back cover, that it is 1.85:1! Then again WB are the worst when it comes to disc specification. The UK release of Blade Runner the Final Cut, states that the audio track is 5.1 LPCM.

This is kinda the reason why i started this thread/list. Instead of taking the cases specs or specs from a website, I opted to get user input that would see with physical eyes what it displays at, regardless of what aspect ratio it states elsewhere. It may be the only thing that makes my list unique.

Biutiful needs to be added. Most of the film is in 1.85:1 although the beginning and ending are in 2.39:1.

Yeah and the problem is most BD reviewers give them a free pass on it.

Need this list as I just bought a 55" LED and watched Hulk, which filled the screen. Looked absolutely amazing

Haven't seen anyone mention this movie (so I made an account)...

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

IMDB says - Aspect Ratio: 2.35 : 1...but Amazon says 1.78:1 (which is the correct AR)...Just watched it 2 days ago and enjoyed the nice full picture it provided.

Which was a dumb decision considering the first two were filmed in 2.35:1.

The movie was shown theatrically in 2.35:1 but for the home video release changed it to 1.78:1. Some of the scenes are cropped while the rest is opened up. I like the Narnia films but I refuse to purchase a home video release that has been so drastically altered from its OAR.
