Yep, 100%. Really love this movie and took my time comparing those scenes thoroughly (in motion and PNG caps I took myself), on a calibrated screen.
Those swallowed details are just not there, not to bring back by boosting brightness / contrast. Same deal as with Fury. . Course you don't have to believe me, doesn't change the facts though. As someone mentioned before, you would've noticed in comparison, not by merely watching the US disc. |

Good that you know the facts, since you do not own either one of the discs I've compared. But just let's agree to disagree and leave it at that. Fury DE release is as well "not just the same video as the US one", it's a different encode, but it origins from the same (Sony) master. |

I didn't just start to look for that about now, that's been 2-3 years ago, that's why I haven't the caps and samples anymore. Anyway, I agree, no point and no interest in discussing that furthermore. |

It's a hair darker but that's NOTHING like the severe black crush that's being discussed in this thread. If it were like Fury or The Interview then much of Cranston's torso would simply be black. Besides, it looks as if the added brightness is exacerbating the grain on the DE.

US, there's just one black mess (pun) inside the left shelf, bottom board. DE you can see what's standing inside, pretty clear. Please, to anyone do not compare these shots on a notebook, they look the same. Plug it to your TV or beamer, you'll be astonished. Quote:
I unfortunately haven't any more US caps / samples, (HD crash 2 years ago) especially those with the missing controls in the cockpit at night are interesting. From the DE disc I can have any frame if needed, OC. |

It's definitely darker, but at least it's not crushed. All the detail is there, just some of it's harder to make out. Like, you can see what's on that shelf if you up your brightness/gamma, which you couldn't in the past crushed screenshots from the movies like My Best Friends Wedding. And, yeah, I could see how one would prefer the more contrasty image in motion.

The DE Drive is probably the one that got its gamma messed up somewhere along the line. You can tell by the undue noise and the posterization/delineation that happens around the pure black parts. Note how even though the US is darker you don't notice the black crush, because there's a smooth gradient from light to dark. Meanwhile on the DE it's immediately obvious where there is zero picture information.
There are some movies with a similar look, e.g. Collateral, but I'm still pretty sure the US one is correct. |
