Default Question on the Re-release of The Fifth Element..

Considering the new version is going to be using the exact same case and such. How will I be able to tell the difference in buying the new one and the original version? Cause, if I'm not mistaken, some of the stores around here still carry the old version.

It should say 're-master' somewhere on the case, at least thats what Sony told me when I signed up for that replacement program. Also I think the stores will be sending their stock back as well for replacement.

I'm sure I read that they were pulling all the old ones upon release of the new one.

I cant remember if Sony does this, but dont they list on the back which codec the movie has??

The old one was MPEG-2 and the new one is going to be AVC.

That's good. I was slightly worried about ending up with the blah version. :P

I haven't seen anything on any of my blu-ray discs where it lists anything about the codecs used.

I don't know this or anything, but maybe the UPC number on the back will be a different number thyan the re-release. That's what they did with the Ultimate Superman Metal Box Set.

I've not seen any reviews per se, but someone over on AVM$ posted a couple of screen shots, comparing the two editions. The remastered version looked *MUCH* better.

Thumbs down Peter Bracke . . .

. . . is an unabashed Sony and Blu-ray hater.

I wouldn't trust his reviews, ever! I would always add at least .5 to 1 full star to all his Blu-ray reviews.

It's amazing the number of 5-star PQ ratings he's handed out to Warner, on several that haven't deserved it.

I would wait for Chad or David Vaughn's review.

In other words, if Bracke gave this 4.5 stars, it must be really terrific.

Sure does make thier bias noticeable doesn't it! I really do not like that website, and the reviews are sometimes apppear inaccurate. Oh well, different eyes, different ears, different system, in a different room.

Folks, I think he's holding out an olive branch (or if you prefer, covering his ass for the future):

Quote:
A year later, the format's fortunes have certainly turned around. Not only has Blu-ray more than redeemed itself with scores of quality high-def releases, but over the course of the first six months of 2007, it has come from behind to beat its high-def rival in overall disc sales by two-to-one.
Quote:
Still, a four-and-a-half star video rating for a ten year-old catalogue title is pretty darn impressive, and should rate as great high-def in anyone's book. Sony is definitely to be commended -- not only for returning to the scene of their past crimes and righting old wrongs, but also for providing this remaster absolutely free to those who purchased the old version.
Let's see how Peter sees from now on.

Gary
