Cool article. I actually watched half of this last night before bed. It looks good. BUT.... i can tell now that netflix 4k content is bit starved. while it looks good, its more on par with a very good blu ray or a little better. But the best UHD discs are ahead of anything offered on netflix. Ive watched all the best stuff on netflix, and they are all beaten on detal/sharpness/resolution by Sicario. The true 4k discs are certainly in a league of their own compared to the upscales/streaming stuff though if you've never seen 100% true 4k that's uncompressed with high bitrate, you may not understand the difference because it can look pretty good. By the way, I'm not the only one that believes that 4k uhd disc beats 4k netflix. Article posted today that echoes my findings as well.
(Btw, im not saying all the 4k discs beat all of netflix 4k, only the best ones) http://www.whathifi.com/news/4k-blu-...-hd-experience Last edited by ray0414; 03-20-2016 at 06:50 AM. |

Could well see them add a model that would output EXISTING games at 4k, but less of a chance for ones that would support games that could only play on the new models. Perhaps they are thinking of supporting games which would play on both, but only give you true 4k on the later models. And perhaps they are thinking of supporting UHD Blu-ray sort of like the PS3 were one of the first and best Blu-ray players. |

Even as far back as the PSX we were getting multiple hardware variations.
![]() I remember audiophiles seeking out Sony Playstation SCPH-1001 because because it was equivalent to a $6000 stand alone in terms of audio quality. Then others had an expansion port to support VCD playback. It would be understandable that Sony could release a UHD enabled PS4. They did say previously when asked that PS4 would likely get a hardware update to introduce UHD rather than a software update. Again, it would be a cheaper option rather than releasing a stand alone player because it's going to sell to gamers as well as home video crowd. |

Hardware revisions are not new and is to be expected. A more powerful hardware revision is something completely different and never happened before.
You can expect a negative reaction from the gaming community if they do this. People don't buy consoles with the expectation a higher end model is going to be released in 2 to 3 years. Consoles are not phones. |

![]() ![]() It's also been done with the Nintendo DS in the form of the DSi and the 3DS in the form of the new3DS. So It's been done before just in a more consumer friendly way in terms of the 32x and N64 expansion pack, and not asking people to rebuy a console. Not that I expect it will be worth the upgrade, since in my opinion at the very most it will only offer 4K upscaling which means nothing to 90% of gamers until UHDTVs become cheaper and offer respectable input lag times. And the UHDBD playback would be marketed towards those with UHDTVs which is still a relatively small market right now I would have rather they had just waited two more years and released PS5. But I suspect PSVR has more to gain from this updated hardware more than anything. Another strong point to consider is that all this is based on an overheard conversation at GDC, and there's plenty that could easily have been misinterpreted. The same thing happened when there were talks of a PlayStation C back in the PSX days, everyone was expecting an updated version of the PSX but it turned out to actually be the PS2. There's just too much speculation and unkowns right now. |

A console is a one and done experience for the casual gamer. They don't buy multiple hardware or accessories like the more hardcore enthusiast do. They're the only ones who would buy this. Releasing a more powerful PS4 is going to split the player base and require more development work for developers. Who already have enough problems shipping buggy games and framrate drops. @Mavrick And how did those add on's do? They weren't successful at all. There's a reason why it was never attempted again. |

the rumour of increased power may well be true but it simply will not do 4K gaming no way no how. Extra power to help VR games out sure, upscaling games sure. But they just aren't going to get real 4K games out of a PS4 revision. I guess we'll see come E3 in June, although I think announcing a new £350+ console right after announcing a £350 gaming peripheral would be a really stupid idea. Maybe leave it until after PSVR has launched in October. |

No. But the majority is. You think PS4 is selling only to the hardcore gamer with that much sold? They reached far beyond that audience at this point.
Try getting them to spend a couple hundred dollars on another PS4. A system only 2 years old. |
