Stating the supremely obvious here, but man what a juggernaut this has been all year. I don't think a single person saw it coming, but you still hear about this movie in some capacity DAILY.

These days, I think the most these big huge blockbusters can hope for is a nom for best picture, and this film certainly deserves it, I feel. But winning best picture? Probably unlikely. I think The Return of the King was the last Mohican of the big blockbuster to accomplish that.

Maybe here at the BD Forum had no idea, but Paramount surely did. That's why they kept moving the release date. They knew they had the goods. All they needed was a level playing field as far as movie theaters.

As of yesterday, December 9
Screenshot_20221210_175609_Chrome.jpg Number 15 spot of all time domestic inflation adjusted, surpassing 'The Avengers' _____ Best Picture of the year? No, this would go to 'Avatar: The Way of Water' By the way, Maverick by next Thursday (Dec. 15) = 203 days (domestic); its last day of the year. That's 7 months minus 1 week. Then we can deduct that Avatar 2 could well play all 2023 year, and make over $2 billion plus. If it wasn't for Covid around the world ... perhaps $3 billion. We'll see ... |

![]() I do not think Avatar will come close to beating TGM. I don't there is the anticipation for it that some thing, especially given how technology has evolved since the first one, and also how more contemporary reviews of the first film haven't been as kind. |

I go with my guts for now. Avatar: The way of Water is on a higher plane than Top Gun: Maverick ... IMHO ...All across levels. I already gave my score to Maverick ( ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() If Avatar 2 was a 2023 flick Maverick would be number one in 2022. * I didn't see all the films made in 2022; there are just too many. Too many movies not enough time. |

It's too new to have generated any major buzz for the Globes and typically awards bodies don't go for blockbusters anyway. Plus the Globes doesn't have technical categories like VFX, sound or editing which Avatar would be more competitive in.
