Watched it for a 2nd time this past weekend at a drive in! It certainly didn't have the same audio impact as it had when I saw it at IMAX but still enjoyable none the less!

Scientology weirdness aside, I really admire the guy! He seems to live life balls to the wall every day and I WISH I had even a drop of whatever he has inside him that drives him! Now he needs to go reprise his role as Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder 2!

Thoroughly enjoyed that. Thought it was gonna be an empty nostalgia fest after that opening sequence mirroring the original beat for beat, but I like that the callbacks after that actually served the story.

The action is epic in its staging yet it’s edited in such helter-skelter fashion it doesn’t give you time to take it all in. Not that the original did everything in one take, lolno, but Tony Scott was the master of chaos and he just had that knack of keeping it intelligible. And for all the guff about “real action” they crank up the CG-o-meter in the final reel though that’s not a bad thing, I was as invested in those flying scenes as any others in the film, perhaps more so because there were higher stakes involved so even with the CG SAMs and chaff and smoke trails and explosions it still felt very visceral and involving.

Top Gun Maverick doesn’t reinvent the wheel - or should that be aileron? - but it does everything so well, it’s an irresistible cinematic treat.

I think that was Joseph Kosinski's way of lubing up nostalgic people and skeptics, before serving them the new story and actual movie.

I liked the way that the music tailed off into a diminishing echo after the title flashes up though, it felt a little melancholy, like them saying “yeah there’s your nostalgia but now that’s done with”.

Didn't you hear? The character of Maverick is part of the MCU now. Disney bought the rights. The next movie with him will be Maverick and the Winter Soldier.

Ehhhh, Marvel was never Paramount’s as such. They just distributed them for Marvel (and not in all territories with the Iron Man films) and didn’t “own” them, which is why Paramount gave them up without a fight when Disnee came calling, though they made off with a couple hundred million simoleons for doing so and insisted that their logo remained on the ones they distributed.

How was the audio done at that drive-in? Do they still do FM broadcasting?

Top Gun Maverick discarded the wheel altogether

I find I can agree with that. I'd go and see it again, I had fun with it, more than any Marvel Phase Four (bore/snore) film I've seen, but I don't feel a compulsion.

While I appreciate that the film bucked the trend of military shows/films being weighted more on the relationship drama than the action (TGM started that love triangle subplot and then completely forgot about it ), I wish that it had put more explanation into why they did the mission the way that they did.

Some of the folks I saw the film with felt that the
[Show spoiler]faster than hypersonic jet
technology used in the opening act was a bit of a "Chekov's Gun" device that went "unfired", the film never used it for anything more.

Correct. You tune into a specific radio station to get the audio. They also blast loud speakers, so if you're sitting outside on lawn chairs, you can still kinda sorta hear it.

Isn't it the same song as the original (the one that plays right at the beginning)? It took me by surprise at first since I never watched the first and it wasn't what I was expecting but it's great. I liked hearing it play at the end too.

No, I think he means the love ballad.

I thought the Lady Gaga song fit the movie perfectly. It sounds a lot like an 80's power ballad anyway so it was perfectly suited.

Agree, they handled it well.
Plus I'm a huge Steve Steven's fan and feel like the guy doesn't get the major respect he deserves as one of the great guitar players of our time.

I was front row on Billy Idol's 'Whiplash Smile' tour in August 1987 Melbourne, Australia. Steven's was brilliant. Largely ignored by the public, but completely respected in the industry.

Top Gun: Maverick is my favourite film so far in 2022 but I hope it doesn't end up being my favourite movie of the year as I have movies coming out later this year that I have high anticipation for but TG:M has set a very high bar (for me).

The only movie that stands a chance of beating this for my favourite of 2022 is Avatar 2

One thing I really appreciated in this movie was how it handled the love scene between Pete and Penny. Typically I cannot stand sex scenes in movies. In almost every case they are completely unnecessary and a waste of time. That sort of thing can always be implied without having to force the audience to sit through it and Top Gun Maverick did this beautifully!
