It was actually a pretty good moment in relation to how Maverick felt in that moment, and made a good point of how nostalgia can be bittersweet or even outright sad.

Additionally, it was a way for Rooster to keep his father alive, which is a central point of the movie, as neither him or Mav have ever managed to really move on with their lives.

Mav's reaction to it was nicely done, but there was no need to watch him play the ENTIRE song. A couple of seconds for Mav to recognise the similarity would have done the same job.

Why the need to cut down everything to mere seconds nowadays? Let some moments and feelings linger a little bit.

The movie knows what it does. If the emotional component of it works so well, it's also because it gives you the time to let it all sink in, and truly care about the characters by the time they are in jeopardy during the climax.

Filmmaking is partially subconscious. It all adds up to take you on a journey and make you feel something and/or provoke thoughts.

Change or shorten one thing, and it might affect other parts of the movie.

Movies with extensive cooperation from the US military is seldom going to present truly flawed characters. They're all going to have a heart of gold or something, but underneath it all they have to be noble and have a willingness to sacrifice everything for the flag. It makes for good entertainment, but it lacks the kind of character development that more sophisticated movies might aim for.
Yeah, I used to live near 2 military bases for 30 years, and the majority of personnel I came across were either like disturbed to the point I questioned buying a bulletproof vest for protection (from a desert storm coworker that “joked” about shooting up the office…(not sure how they’re still there to this day)…to the majority who honestly seemed mostly like Hangman, arrogant asf with little redeeming qualities. While stereotypes and hyperbole only take one so far it’s a trend that should be bothersome, but it seems so many of these character flaws are overlooked because of being military when it wouldn’t be if they were in any other profession. So you know, double standards and all.

I guess there was that one afternoon delight with that one airman…can’t say there’s too much to complain about that one.

Apparently you don't know how humor in the military works, the darker the better, and it does carry over when you go back to being a civilian.

aspiring deepthinkng 'filmmaker' in the making here. i look forward to ur timeless classics

i havent seen the movie (hard rental) but the problem with the clip, from what i can gather is that, it's not even done that well. Definitely feels lifeless. IE TACKED ON as another poster has mentioned for sheer fandom. Poor attempt at recreating a feeling of comradery? because all i see is a cringy scene being played out.

I won't be caring about what happens to the characters because they are annoying the hell out of me in this moment.
I dunno, maybe you're easily impressed (most likely)? and anyone else who isnt on the same page is wrong/gets attacked. Must be fun leading such an ignorant life.

it also doesn't help that they are probably using studio audio for the clip and not the actual audio that plays in the movie

nitpickin isnt critique

Mark Hirstwood knows what's up.

Edit: Just saw the 'never before seen footage' tidbit, so the entire scene isn't in the movie, good good.
