Saw this today (finally) in London in 4K and Dolby Vision.

Two teeny weenie quibbles - the bar scene near the beginning went on a tad too long and they pulled the same narrative trick twice towards the end - but otherwise absolutely stunning.

For the sake of accuracy... Crikey O'reilly... I do enjoy a good "well everyone I know agrees with me, so I must be right!" statement though, as if anyone who pulls that argument out of their backside has the kind of personality people would actually flock to!

Box Office graph goes off the projected max/min chart more every week

As it defies the model, I have to wonder is top gun demonstrating that there is a hidden market to tap if your movie is appealing enough? Or perhaps, are there people who quit going to theatrical movies that Top Gun is bringing back into theaters?

The latter IMO. This isn't the first billion dollar baby and it won't be the last, so it's not so much a "hidden market" as it is one that went into hibernation thru Covid. Still, it's a simple enough formula: make a good old-fashioned crowd pleasing blockbuster and people will flock to it. Who knew?

I think it also helps that it's not instalment number 74 in whatever franchise, you know? Yes, it IS indeed a sequel but it's come 36 years later so I think the nostalgia thing is being hugely overplayed here, at least in terms of nostalgia for the IP itself (otherwise BR2049 and Afterlife would've done bonzo numbers, as it is Maverick's domestic gross alone has exceeded the entire global gross for them combined). It's a movie that delivers on its flimsy premise and you don't need to have even seen the original to glean a lot of enjoyment from it.

The outlier in the number 74 thing is of coursh the amazing success of No Way Home but that's about as self contained an MCU movie as you're gonna get in recent times, if such a thing makes sense when it follows on from not just the MCU but also heavily references the five previous Spidey films! But that mishmash is what gives it a more standalone flavour, it's episodic rather than deeply serialised and with all those memberberries dangling everywhere then it appeals to every section of contemporary Spider-Man movie fandom.

Mav's success is its own trend, it's one for the oldies! (Though you don't gross over a billion simoleons without attracting a wide range of demographics.)

Pretty good. The hype kind of killed it a bit for me but I still really dug it.

This year's Paramount slate was put together by Jim Gianopolous, who's been ousted by the head honchos.

We'll see whether Brian Robbins will be able to keep up with that, or if he'll run the studio into the ground in an attempt to boost Paramount+ numbers.

But to be fair, Robbins did bring those releases over the finish line.

Looks like a $4.8M Tuesday. It's insane that this hasn't dropped below $4M on weekdays yet.

Hopefully Top gun Maverick will teach modern Hollywood how to make an action film that people will turn out for without relying on comic book characters. This one had a popular IP from back in the day attached from it, but if it were the typical paint by numbers reboot that most are these days it would have not performed anywhere near this well

For all the hate Tom Cruise gets he just keeps churning out one great film after another.

Even his "little" side projects have been good like American Made.

I never understood why him jumping on Oprah's chair was such a big deal. So he went off the rails a bit BFD. I was only interested in the quality of his films.

Also Scientology, another thing I really don't care about. It's his belief and that's it.

Maverick was one helluva movie and it was really nice of him to bring Val back. That was Tom's decision all the way as was everything else in this film.

And his rant on I think Mission Impossible during Covid was completely understandable. You need to bring the hammer down sometimes because people won't listen and there were millions of dollars and jobs at stake.

Tom Cruise is also a great actor, much better than what some people give him credit for. Jerry Maguire clearly shows how good he is besides the action films as does Collateral.

I have a lot of Tom's films and double dipped for many of the 4K titles. Collateral is coming this week.

Cruise also understands the whole filmmaking process. He’s not just worried about his part, he sees the overall picture. And as a film fan, he knows that actors actually in the planes looks a lot better than green screening it. Ditto swinging around outside a terrifyingly tall building or clinging to a plane.

Maybe, aside from driving a stake through the heart of Universal's attempted reboot of the Monsterverse...

The Mummy was an odd misstep for Cruise. It didn’t seem to have his hands-on approach, as if his heart wasn’t in it.

He’d turned down the 1999 Mummy film. I like his 2017 version, despite many flaws, but he should’ve turned it down, too.

They’d talked about a Black Lagoon remake, in 3D, starring Scarlet Johansson.

I really wish they’d made it.

I enjoyed it but it could have been better. Some missteps but Tom still has a very good track record.

Oblivion another film that didn’t do great which I liked a lot

Wasn’t Invisible Man part of Monsterverse?

I believe he made the right call in '99 as TC doesn't fit the BF/Nathan Fillion/Crisp Ratt archetype and, 20+ years later, I don't see Tom Cruise as playing in those sort of fun action-comedies.

Which is too bad because Tom Cruise by and large seems to still be able to make the kind of movies that he wants to be in, and if he were in those sort of fun action-comedies then it'd mean that films like that would still be made.
