That wasn't Socko's point though, considering that none of the films, except Maverick and Spider-Man, came out during a pandemic.

Now that "TG:M" has become the new zeitgeist film, I'm wondering if it will be a major Oscar contender. Sure, it will get numerous technical nominations, but I'm thinking Best Picture and 'maybe' Best Actor nods could be in the cards...

Don't mind a bit if she gets an Oscar for her work here

I could see it easily being the blockbuster nominee of the year for Best Picture - the reviews, the box office, similar to how Dune and Fury Road were nominated for Best Picture.

It'll very likely sweep the technical Oscars like Fury Road and Dune, I also think a BP nom is possible.

I probably won't watch even if it is nominated. The award show this year will definitely not be as interesting as last year's.

...Until Will Smith's ban is lifted 9 years early for good behavior, and he co-hosts the show with Chris Rock.

Ukraine Let's talk Oscars, shall we ...

Top Gun: Maverick / Oscar prospects
https://www.nextbestpicture.com/late...p-gun-maverick

Today anything is possible in Hollywood; Top Gun is not mission impossible.

Top Gun, Oscar nomination for Best Picture? They all can say whatever they want to say, but the fact remains. It is possible.

Maverick, Oscar nomination for Best Actor? Wouldn't be that nice.

Oscar nomination for Best Director? ...

Top Gun: Maverick is flying high above the sky and up there is where Oscars live and die.
It is inevitable.

I know the Academy and the fans feel like an Oscar for Cruise is long overdue. I could see a nomination as a nice gesture for him, but this definitely isn't the role that would win for him.

However, with 10 nominations available, the universal critic and audience praise for the film, and the unprecedented box office, I think a Best Picture nomination could be a lock.

It says "Do Not Touch," so probably yes.

As for Oscar chances... never say never, but if there's going to be acting noms, Jennifer better be getting one. Just sayin'

A recognition @ Oscar's night, certainly.

Shure, nobody has to read the article from that link above; it's a free country somehow.
But it is fun for shure.

Conclusion
If you were to ask this pundit what categories to predict "Top Gun: Maverick" in for the 95th Academy Awards this far out, I'd divide its possible nominations into four categories.

Very Likely

Best Picture
Best Film Editing
Best Original Song
Best Sound
Best Visual Effects

On The Cusp

Best Cinematography
Best Original Score

Less Likely

Best Director
Best Adapted Screenplay

Not Going To Happen

Best Actor
Best Supporting Actor
Best Supporting Actress

He can get an oscar for best Jaw Clenching! (Seriously, he does it every scene of this film, is that his thing now? Dude looks like he could bite the fender off a Buick).

I saw this late, had fun but some of the story details and structure leave a lot to be desired imo, hard to understand why its doing this good. I guess we've come full circle where sequels now are respected for doing the same thing with same music just bigger! Thanks a lot Force Awakens lol

Unlike TFA, I predict this one will win big... at least 12 Oscars... maybe even more.

Ha ha I mentioned the jaw clenching after watching also, he does do it a lot and it would make an effective drinking game lol.
