An ironic drinking game, since he suddenly became such a Scrooge-style parsimonious pinch-penny with Nedry.

They’re both legit box office phenoms, it doesn’t need to turn into a pissing contest.

I generally agree with you there. Except that No Way Home had ZERO competition during it's run. Top Gunn Maverick is doing all it's doing in the summer with LOTS of competition. So, there is a distinct difference. And should be understood AND celebrated.

Conclusion
If you were to ask this pundit what categories to predict "Top Gun: Maverick" in for the 95th Academy Awards this far out, I'd divide its possible nominations into four categories.

Very Likely

Best Picture
Best Film Editing
Best Original Song
Best Sound
Best Visual Effects

On The Cusp

Best Cinematography
Best Original Score

Less Likely

Best Director
Best Adapted Screenplay

Not Going To Happen

Best Actor
Best Supporting Actor
Best Supporting Actress
Move Cinematography to Very Likely. theres also a good chance for Best Director as well. and Adapted Screenplay

Top Gun Maverick has competition?

As I hear it, much of the support for Maverick is coming from folks for whom there hasn't been another appealing movie in/for years.

Cruise got a beaucoup of folks who bragged that they hadn't seen a film in theaters since Ronald Reagan was President, as the meme goes, to break their de facto boycott with a "buycott".

If they want to have a real shot at the screenplay award they should promptly settle that lawsuit over the story credit

HA HA HA. That lawsuit business popped up in the news and sunk faster than the Titantic. Thought they were asking to have the movie pulled. Yeah. That lawsuit was bogus from the start.

Ah vawy good; Oscar's contentions for Maverick @ the 95th.
That, is something everyone loves to share their opinion.

Nomination for Best Visual Effects sounds like it's in the bag.
Nomination for Best Sound?

This flick will be nominated for few. Even Tom could be nominated. He doesn't have to win to be nominated; he has already won ... the largest paycheck ever in the world of Hollywood. Tom doesn't need a statue, he can buy all the statues he want.

Lady Gaga, but of course; it goes without mentioning. She's a big part of the Top Gun crew.
That's a nomination 100% guaranteed. Anyone wants to bet?

And yet at the same time it should be realised that people didn’t go and see NWH again and again and again just because there was nothing else on, because there was. Eternals and Afterlife were released the month before, West Side Story the week before, Matrix Resurrections and Sing 2 the week after, any sane person would consider those to be a big threat…except they weren’t, but that wasn’t NWH’s fault, was it? It’s an entirely false narrative that it was released into some barren wasteland of a schedule.

No, there were plenty of other options for people but they just didn’t take, whereas the hype around NWH was real and it was enough to make people overcome their fears and venture out to a cinema again en masse. Marvel’s prior effort couldn’t do it, Ghostbusters couldn’t do it, Matrix couldn’t do it, Señor Spielbergo couldn’t do it, but my god Spidey did it. Fair play to the singing CG animals though, Sing 2 only opened to $22M domestic but closed on $162M, that’s a hell of a multiplier and like NWH and TGM it just kept on going, still taking millions every week right into April.

We all knew NWH was gonna have multiverse spidey shenanigans but Marvel played it brilliantly by not spoiling the surprise; the OW was so huge because people wanted to see if the rumours were true and it carried on taking coin week after week because people knew that the rumours were true and wanted to wallow in this love letter to Spideys past and present. It’s easy to say this after the fact but I think it would’ve done much the same business even if those other movies had done betterer.

What NWH did should also be understood AND celebrated.

All that is certainly very true. And I do agree with it. Although I would say most of the movies you mentioned that came out around the same time as No Way Home were not really competition. Not in the same sense as some of the ones Top Gun Maverick faced. Not to mention, Maverick is a sequel to 36 year old film. No Way Home is a sequel to a 2 year old film. Still, your points are valid.

Ukraine In an era of a pandemic ... In the whole world

No Way Home is the King in a speedo suit of 2021-22, no doubt just short of two billion US dollars, by only one hundred million.
Domestic the speedo guy is number 3 of all time (unadjusted), wow!
And Worldwide number 6, wow again!
_____

Maverick is the Supreme leader in a flying suit of 2022, ...so far.
It has some company too ...
• Doctor Strange ☆
• Dominion ☆
• Lightyear
• Elvis
• Minions ☆
• Thor ☆
• Nope
• Super-Pets
• Bob's Burgers?

* If we look @ the top money makers, look no further than the four Avengers flicks.
Together they made a whole bunch of cash.

But right now the spotlight is on Maverick. It is what it is, in the year 2022, in the summer time, with Duracell batteries. And, a flick with Oscar contenders nonetheless.
Cinematography?
Lady Gaga yes, even if it's not my cup of tea personally.

If it'll get nominated for Best Picture then it'll get nominated for Best Director too.

* Just an opinion: We're talking Hollywood movies here, and in Hollywood you cannot escape the dollar sign. The true real good movies are very few, and true moviemaking art we all know which ones, and they don't generally make money, not like CGI flicks for the kids...superheroes animated and not.

Surprised he hasn't said that Paramount are going to keep it in cinemas permanently. Still, I'm going to see it again tonight so I'm doing my part!
