And I'm glad it's not playing in those two countries; Hollywood doesn't need Russia and China right now. It's very good that Maverick is taking a break from them.
Russia was never a major market for Hollywood movies. China on the other hand is the number one movie market in the world.

Your nationalism is admirable but it's a big fail as far as business goes. TGM could have easily have done $800M to $1B in China alone.

I know Russia is worthless for the Hollywood movie industry.
And you're pushing it big time about China with your $800-1,000 million.

That figure is simply a product of your imagination. After the success of Battle at Lake Changjin, it's very hard to imagine Chinese audiences ever flocking to any movie where the US armed forces are the good guys.

It's my opinion. There is something very special about TGM. And I don't see that failing at the Chinese BO.

Let me know when opinions become fact OK?

No but I read the overview. That was a VERY different kind of movie - a land battle. Try as you might - it's a bad comparison to TGM

That's not even emotely the basis for comparison. That movie, and it's sequel, both portray the US military not just as the bad guys, but also as completely incompetent, arrogant, and cartoonishly mediocre at war. And Chinese audiences absolutely loved those movies.

Feel free to believe whatever you want to believe, but you can't convince me Chinese audiences are going to want to see the kind of portrayal of the US forces that you get here.

I've waited along time to view this film. Watched it last night.

Disappointed overall, and the final 30 minutes were too ludicrous for me to suspend reality. The plot was largely recycled from the first. Music was great and so were the eventual air combat scenes.

2.5/5 Rounded down to 2 for the poll.

The film initially had a Chinese investor, Tencent, who paid for over 10% of the films budget. The film removed the Taiwan and Japan flags from Maverick’s jacket because they expected it to play in America.

They eventually pulled out of fear that the govt censors wouldn’t let the film through and so far it hasn’t come out in China officially. But I’m in China right now visiting family and everyone here has still seen it through unofficial means.

Chinese people just like war movies. They don’t need the movies to make Americans look foolish to enjoy them. They love Captain America and Transformers which are also films that glorify our military, just more subtly than something like Top Gun. People here rent “private cinemas” where they can watch movies that got banned by the govt. including Top Gun Maverick and the last 7 MCU films.

Ukraine Non-adjusted for inflation ...

Tom Cruise’s ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Could End Summer By Topping Box Office

I think TG:M will supplant Black Panther on the 6th (perhaps on the 7th - Mojo #s).
...For 5th place on all-time domestic (Black Panther = $700,426,566).

And Frozen II on the 20th (two weeks later).
...For 11th place on all-time worldwide (Frozen II = $1,450,026,933).
______

* All Time Domestic Inflation Adjusted Box Office
Top Gun: Maverick stands @ position #18 right now.
I think it will get to position #15 by the end of its run, with roughly $720 million.
______

Maverick is a $1.455 billion+ flick (global)...perhaps $1.470 billion flick.
The next two months are gong to be exciting as exciting it could be.

Ukraine International

All Time International Box Office

Top Gun: Maverick stands @ position #34 right now.
I am 99% (100%) certain that it will surpass 'Captain America: Civil War' @ position #29.
...Non inflated, non adjusted for inflation internationally.

* Captain America: Civil War (#29) = $743,834,172 (International)

He wasn't sharing his opinion as a spokesperson.
That was in general terms, as it goes similar in many other countries.

Personally I love romantic flicks.

If we did a global poll as to which genre of movies people prefer the most, my bet would be on romantic superheroes flicks. Maverick is a romantic; it's a love story in disguise @ maximum speed.

People love emotional romances in their flicks.
* Did you see Roma by Alfonso Cuarón?

How is Maverick a love story? I could understand it being a love story between Maverick and pushing the limits, or Maverick and his beloved aircraft.

But as a "boy meets girl" type romance, I'm not seeing it. The film started a love triangle up for Phoenix, but it thankfully flamed out.

I could see a case that it's an anti-romantic film, as we see Iceman and his longtime wife apparently surrounded by their legacy, contrasted with Maverick, who has no legacy and gets paired off with a love interest with whom he cannot start one.

It had the same tragedy to it as Jurassic World Dominion did, where an old flame was also rekindled decades too late.
