I always knew the actors were not flying the planes and were in the back seat.

I am surprised anyone thought otherwise.

Won’t Black Panther get a re-release before part 2 and scratch the B no. 5 spot back from top gun maverick?

Finally got around to seeing this. Overall, I liked it though not gaga over it like some.

Then again, I never really have an attachment to the original like others so that may have affected how I felt about the movie.

8/10

It might have been better than the original. The jet action was, as the final fight in TG1 was rather disjointed with all of the cuts and recycled footage. I was surprised at how close it came to Quantum of Solace/Taken Sequels level of cuts. I suppose Star Wars was their inspiration for cutting between pilot and plane, but it was less frenetic there.

Anyhow, point being that the jet fighting was easier to follow in TGM than in TG, I thought. TGM also had a stronger plot, even if its existence was thinly justified by just that throwaway line about GPS jammers.

The soundtrack was better in the original, Hans Zimmer could really stand to take a sabbatical.

One little touch I liked was that they didn't erase the reflections of the cockpit cameras in the pilots' helmets, the cinematographer said they had to work so hard to get that stuff in there that they kept the reflections as an acknowledgement of that work.
Interesting, in an interview with the director he said the camera cables are visible and they kept them in.
Didn’t know about the reflections.

Maverick isn’t done yet.
He still has some millions to shoot at before he touches down that plane of his.

Ukraine Vroom vroom Top Boom-Box: Maverick ...

Maverick is flying high just below Avatar ...
https://variety.com/2022/film/box-of...ca-1235353287/

Quote:
"The film returned to the top of box office charts over Labor Day weekend, adding $7.9 million between Friday and Monday and bringing ticket sales to $701 million. According to Paramount, “Maverick” is the only film to ever be No. 1 at the domestic box office for both Memorial Day and Labor Day holidays.

Cruise is getting well compensated for reviving the movie theater industry. By the time “Maverick” leaves theaters and ends up on Paramount Plus, the stunt extraordinaire is expected to pocket at least $100 million from ticket sales, his salary, home entertainment rentals, and streaming revenue."
Number one on Labor Day long weekend with $8 million, whoah!
Number eleven worldwide by next weekend.
What will be coming after that ... only the skies know.

Unlike the original this actually a decent movie even outside the scenes with airplanes going whoosh.

Like, I saw the original only a month or so ago for the first time (which is probably a shame for someone who owns a HOTAS like me) and everything outside the planes was every stupid cliché played completely straight without any kind of charm to boot. Of course this stupidity has given us Hot Shots so it's not all bad.

This new one actually manages to have a narrative that isn't bottom of the barrel and does get how silly certain situations are without doing the full self-aware shtick some movies today tend to abuse. The conversation between Maverick and Rooster on land during the last bit was genuinely funny for example.

Ukraine Maverick: Top North American flying saga @ the movies

Maverick is projected to make between 4 and $4.5 million this weekend (Sept. 9-11).
That would bring its total domestic revenues to between 706.5 and $707 million.

Screenshot_20220908-173953_Chrome.jpg

Maverick keeps flying into the Milky Way. This weekend it will hit spot number 11 in all-time worldwide box office (non-adjusted for inflation).

And for inflation adjusted I'd say it'll get the number 15 spot in all-time domestic with roughly $720 million, by the end of its run.

Maverick is a $1.480 billion flick ... in that neighborhood (1.470-1.480)

Extra:
‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is unlike any blockbuster Hollywood has seen in years

I'm more concerned with the fact that the "fifth generation fighters" used this f-16/a-10 stile grip:
[Show spoiler]

If they can buy a Thrustmaster Warthog for the movie they could have easily spent the same money for one of these Sukhoi-based grips which I think would have also been more visually interesting:
[Show spoiler]

In addition to the big red button on top they have a bunch of tech-y looking switches and a flip trigger, it would have looked more "other" so-to-speak and also would have avoided using an American-style grip on a supposedly foreign aircraft.

That chart isn't reliable. Inflation has jumped pretty high over the past 2 years. Black Panther would be around $900m now.

Yes I am aware of that; it changes every year, and in 2022 with the inflation rising sky high.
The main matter impact is to be closest to the ballpark; it's the best we the number crunchers can do @ the movies.

Maverick is like . . . gone with the wind
