Here's a 4k version of the last trailer for download. Notice the grain.

https://thedigitaltheater.com/2022/0...a-and-ac3-5-1/

Edit: Found my 4k copy of the 2019 trailer. Found a screenshot to compare the two.

Puddy, a few general comments as trailers can, but do not always, precisely represent the final product. These days, the quality in the appearance of the grain sometimes being added to digitally captured imagery has increased since the time of those polarized forum/message board arguments and the conclusions by reviewers that artificial grain = frozen grain, which is fake and therefore bad. For instance, Stefan (https://www.company3.com/artists/stefan-sonnenfeld/) has been color grading on the Resolve for years and if Joe or Claudio desired it, Resolve Grain looks good for adding texture. Better yet is LIVEGRAIN - https://www.livegrain.com/ , something which a feature film having a large budget like Top Gun: Maverick could easily absorb its additional expense, likewise if the filmmakers desired it.

Whether theater-goers and home theater enthusiasts realize it or not, color scientists, especially, know that humans, at least subconsciously, prefer some texture in what they see with their eyes and this didn’t all start first with the ‘film look’ presented in motion pictures captured by film cameras and celluloid; but rather, the inherent phenomenon of stocastic resonance involving the human visual system.

Anyway, with your theatrical or home deliverable, if compression doesn’t make the value of adding grain to digital imagery totally moot (which it can/and has with some finished products), then I think it is quite worthwhile to add some texture to provide a more organic look.

Gonna pony up for the $20 show here, which hits a few days early and comes with a free pin. Ha.

Artistic creation; like the way 'Dune' (Denis Villeneuve) picture was manipulated to give that special intent.

Also, many flicks by Tony Scott (Top Gun, Days of Thunder, True Romance, Crimson Tide, Enemy of the Stare, Man on Fire, Domino, Deja Vu, Unstoppable).

So, Puddy, after getting somewhat didactic in my post above, do you, like LordoftheRings, like the texture of the TG:M trailer?

And Bob, speaking of Bullitt ^, in case you were unaware, there’s an upcoming Spielberg connection –
"You can bet there's going to be an epic car chase," says an insider. "And you can guarantee that Spielberg will out-do anything Steve McQueen did in the original film.” -
https://express.co.uk.trem.media/ent...isco-Chronicle

I say, perhaps so, but not in real life driving a car –

Neither I. How come we don't hear much about 4DX?

* Top Gun: Maverick doesn't appear to play in 3D in North America.

Yeah... I would like to watch it in 4DX but if the movie is displayed in 3D it doesn't interest me...

I corrected my post: Maverick appears nowhere in 3D anyway.
IMAX 2D yes; good enough for me.

* What is 4DX?

Depends on the cinema chains in your country. It's mostly carried by Regal in the US.

Maverick is 2D only.

Coz it's a gimmick and a terrible one at that. Mostly takes you out of a movie rather than immerse you in it. Validates Scorsese comparing certain movies to theme park rides. 4DX is TRASH!!!

I'm fine with it. I assume it's to more closely match the original movie. But my original question:

Does anyone remember it being so grainy two years ago? Or is it new? I know Kosinski basically locked the film back then and said in an interview that he wasn’t going to fiddle with it with all his extra time. So do you think they added a regular digital grain emulation to match the original movie back then. Or do you think it’s possible that Cruise, being the film enthusiast, saw Dune and The Batman and decided to do a film out like them?

Nice.

Do you live in a major US city? If so, where? I haven't seen much of this.
