I never read actual reviews and I look at the RT scores to gauge a general “excitement”, but ultimately I’ll watch a movie and form my own opinion. But that being said, it is great when a movie you like or are excited to see has a good score, because that’ll usually drive “the masses” to see it at some point too because of its score.

So I agree, happy to see the score up there for sure.

Why? Top Gun Maverick's competition is not that high of bar. Except this film apparently broke the sound barrier passed that bar.

It can be. I remember Ouija Origin of Evil being a massive jump in quality compared to its og... but the og was a mediocre movie.

If they wanted her in the movie they would have made it work, with makeup, preparation for the role and a bit of "movie magic" but they never even bothered.

Like, Val Kilmer isn't what he once was either, sadly, but Tom Cruise wanted his return and they made it happen.

Well maybe it's entirely possible they did not ask her back for other reasons not related to how she looks.

In any event, Jennifer Connelly is playing Tom's love interest in this one - she's a talented actress, they are both in their fifties, she's apparently playing a character who was referenced in the first film, so it's all good.

The first movie isn't exactly "good". Yes, it's a big part of pop culture and a defining film of the 80s, containing some of the best aerial stunts and action sequences ever captured on film and one of the most popular movie soundtracks of the time. But from a story and character standpoint it's mediocre at best.

So, really, all they needed to do to make this one better is get an actual script while, at the very least, maintain the same level of dedication to the action sequences (which I'm sure Cruise was adamant about). And it seems they pulled it off.
