Default Please help me! Grainy movies...

Hello all, I am new to this forum and need help. I just bought a 42 inch Sharp Aquos TV, and have it connected via HDMI cable to my PS3. Talladega Nights had come with my PS3, and when I put it in, it didnt look right. I just bought "300", and its the same thing. I have a Sony TV downstairs that is about 5-6 years old and DVD's on that TV look BETTER than Blu Rays on my Aquos or DVD's on my Aquos . I have a Psyclone HDMI cable for the PS3 (supposed to be great via Best Buy guy).

Can anyone help me and tell me whats wrong? Makes no sense. It is fuzzy in the background, and it looks like the pixels (i think) might be moving on solid surfaces (aka a wall looks like it has bugs on itor in "300" the background just doesnt look right. It is all brand new equipment. And just so u know, games on the PS3 and my Xbox 360 look spectacular (literally perfect), so i dont know if its the TV, Blu Ray, or cables. (Also DVDs on my Xbox 360 look HORRIBLE on my TV, so i dont think it sthe HDMI cables)

If u can help me PLEASE respond. Any input at all would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks !!

P.S. I dont know if this is the right section for this, but it seemed the most appropriate.

have you gone into the options menu of the PS3 and tried messing with the video quality?

Update your firmware. What I'm guessing is happening is that your Sharp Aquos is 720p resolution, and the PS3 may not be detecting 1080i resolution on the TV. If you don't have firmware 1.80+ installed, it'll output Blu-rays in 480p instead of 720p if your TV doesn't support 1080i, which means it won't look any better than a standard DVD.

If firmware still doesn't fix it, post back a reply with the exact model number of your TV and we can try and take another stab at this.

BTW, this doesn't belong in the Games section.

P.S. Best Buy guys have no idea what they're talking about. Never ever take their advice. If you paid more than $15 for your HDMI cable you were ripped off.

Comeon guys, it's a textbook case of I don't like/understand film grain, surely.

Could be that, too. 300 is one of the grainiest movies out there, while Talladega Nights is one of the most artifact-ridden transfers on Blu-ray.

Since DVDs on the 360 looks bad on the TV as well, I suggest you go back to the store and tell them exactly what you posted here. OR it could just be another troll post

First off. thanks to everyone who is tryin to help, it is VERY GREATLY APPRECIATED, i cant even sleep thinkin my equipment is messed up!

The TV model number is LC-42D62U , it is a 1080P TV with my PS3 updated to version 1.90.

Also, I might be wrong , but I cant believe that the director wanted 300 to look like this on my TV, or anyones, its too grainy (i guess), and only some parts look right- also, when u watch 300, it kind of flashes the picture, im sorry my technical jargon is not upto par, but this is eh best way I can explain it, any more thoughts or help ??

300 was ment to look like that because it was almost entirely CGI. And like other people said get some better movies. I suggest Disturbia, Wild Hogs, Vacancy and TMNT to go along with the already mentioned movies.

quick question?

in the ps3 settings do you have 1080p/24Hz turned on? (turn it off)

Settings - BD/DVD Settings - 1080p 24 Hz Output (HDMI) - OFF

...wonder if this is giving you the "flashes"?

If both Blu-rays and DVDs in both the PS3 and Xbox 360 look bad, maybe it's your TV. Try you're DVD player on your Aquos, do your DVDs still look bad?

I had a similar experience! Was your Sony a HDTV? I went from a Sony Trinitron 720p HDTV that is about 4+ years old. DVD looked quite good on it. Then I bought a 1080p 42" Vizio and a PS3 and DVDs all look much worse. Very pixilated and somewhat grainy. I think this is from two things. 1) LCD in general I think just look bad when playing DVDs 2) Your eyes need to adjust to your LCD tv. The more I used my LCD tv the less I noticed the grain/pixilation look. DVDs still look poopy but BD look amazing. Go rent Apocolypto from Blockbuster or Casino Royal and you should see a big difference. Also, make sure your sharpness and color are not up very high most LCD tv by default have these settings cranked.

Default Yet another grain issue....

before everyone gets upset, this is not another 300 post trying to ***** about the grain. This one is different!

I have a Samsung DLP projection TV. its a 56" 1080p. I have a PS3 hooked up with a monster 1080p certified HDMI cable. (some may argue that I overpaid for that cable but right now thats not the issue)

Every movie I have on blu ray, (shooter, 300, gone in 60 seconds, Ghost Rider, Underworld, Italian Job, corpse bride, and I cant think of the other 2 right now) are all showing grain. Not too much grain but just a little bit here and there. I know I shouldnt be too picky but my setup cost me close to $4k when you involve my surround sound.

It seems as though I have too much grain present than the TVs at BB had when I picked everything up. Those TVs made blu ray look better than I have at home. Maybe its cause they had their setup hooked up to an aquos or a bravia but I dont think that is the case.

Grain seems more present in the neutral colors such as browns, tans, taupes, etc.... Could it be a problem with my TV? is the contrast or brightness up too high or low? If anyone has any input, please let me know. If it is normal than so be it but I would like to think that I could get better picture than what I am getting.

Any input would be sweet.

Thx all

WW

LOL theater cost 2M each and there's ton of grain. Grain is the structure of film, it's also use in CGI heavy movie to hide the CGI since we are still 10-20years away of being able to use CGI correctly at 99% of the screen without it (like 300, perfect example of use and reason why)
