I watched this on 4K the other night, looked and sounded great. Yes it's a bit grainy at times (especially in darker scenes), but it wasn't horrendous. My Blade Runner 4K has a lot more noticeable grain than this, and at times is almost unwatchable.

Literally, I don't know if it's the disc or my X800, but it's the grainiest UHD I have. Lighter scenes look great, but there's no scene in the movie that's without noticeable grain. I don't recall my 2007 blu-ray looking that grainy. At least it has an awesome Atmos track.

![]() but yeah, HDR still looks excessive to me. But then again, I didn't like sony's fifth element HDR treatment either. At least, we can all agree THOSE original filmmakers most likely weren't involved in the 4K transfers of their own movies (starship...fifth element), right? I just wanna hear you guys say it Last edited by Synchg; 09-25-2017 at 01:59 AM. |

In terms of fidelity to 'Troopers original look as a projected print--not that that's what blu-ray re-masters are always striving for--would anyone say the UK blu is more faithful in terms of contrast, color timing, resolution and perceivable grain?

If I were in charge of a release like this, I'd think an interpositive, ideally an answer print, would be the best reference for color/contrast/grain/etc. It's the highest quality image one can directly view, although for detail's sake one would want to scan the OCN if it is available.
The latitude on a film negative is bonkers, far more than what you'd ever see in a release print. However, I really doubt a filmmaker would not want to show a higher quality source like an IP if they could. The detail and color is all captured on the negative, waiting to be seen. That's why there is no creator's intent issue with going to the film negatives for TV shows like Star Trek, Twin Peaks, Knight Rider, etc. You are now able to see far more of what was originally captured on set without the limitations of videotape and NTSC broadcasts. Without an answer print and/or the involvement of the DP, director, etc, who is to say what the film is supposed to look like? I suppose at the end of the day we just need to use our eyes and knowledge as a gauge for what looks appropriately film-like for transfers like this if we have nothing else to go on, but sometimes I wonder what Sony uses as references for the HDR grade. I know Warner had the involvement of Scorsese, Eastwood, and Scott for their respective UHD releases. Sony had ol' Marty for Taxi Driver as well along with the DP when it came to their BD release, so I imagine they approved whatever grading they employed as they struck new prints as well for the restoration. I guess it is the same question we have always asked about home video releases. Given their track record and what I've seen on Blu-ray and what I know about Grover Crisp, I'm inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt unless I get information to the contrary. Or perhaps I should try and turn off my brain and enjoy these releases given the wonderful reviews I have heard. As a whole I think we've gotten quite the tasty treat with UHD. I'm jealous of all these reviews sometimes but am honestly happy that you all are enjoying yourselves. ![]() Last edited by singhcr; 09-25-2017 at 01:58 AM. |

Spectacular video in 4k for such an old movie. Just watched it tonight and remember why I like it so much. Those space ship attack scenes at night looked amazing and immersing on my 125" screen. Dolby atmos as thunderous too.

I watched this last night, and I thought it looked fantastic. I worked in a movie theater when Starship Troopers came out and probably saw it five times. Granted, that was 20 years ago, but I think this UHD is the best I've ever seen it look other than that pristine print on opening night. I'm not sure why some have an issue with the HDR grade either, the colors looked accurate to me.

I hate to ask, scanned several pages... does the standard blu have Atmos audio or just the 4K disc? I don’t mind buying it to future proof if I can hear the Atmos track.
The back Cover is posted on site but it doesn’t really clarify. Thanks in advance |

No, the BD release does not have Atmos. There is no BD remaster, it's the same disc that was released in 2008.
