How much better is the Dolby Vision on this release? I have the original release and the HDR is too hot IMO. The new one seems identical. Does the DV have a different grade for the tone mapping or is it also hot?

I was also wondering to myself if the DV would calm this puppy down a bit.

Not to me. The brighter shots fare betterer on the old one, they always did look great, but the interiors (shot on some noisy-as hell 500-speed stock) are more cohesive on the new one. Even on the new one the grain doesn't look tack-sharp and still seems a bit blocky, but it's way blockier on the old one!

Better encode but the same LIGHT CANNON HDR!?!
Really hoped that would have been tamed down and more in line with how HDR is supposed to be handled, not nuked APL.
Cest la vie, maybe for the 30th...

Ouch not fair! A gif from Sunshine.....another sublime Fox horror sci fi title inextricably ensconced in the inescapable mousetrap from hell, where films are left to languish and die.

None of these Sony reissues have materially changed the grade except for the smallest fraction of colour here and there, though if anything some of the reissues seem the slightest bit brighter to my eyes. But it's all about dat DV when it comes to taming the image.

This is one instance where I actually prefer the regular Blu-ray. It looks far more natural. Yeah, it's softer but looks like film. The 4k looks sharper but maybe over sharp. The HDR I just don't like. I wish it was better. Sony does much better transfers now. Take a look at Heavy Metal. It's perfect! Sadly this was an early effort and they hadn't quite figured it out IMO.

Give the Dobly a chance. That plus the new encode tends to smooth out these harsher early UHDs from Sony.

So you've already bought it anyway despite not liking it?

No, I'm watching the disc on my Nvidia Shield Pro. It can't do DV, only HDR10. I'll have to work some magic so that I can watch it in DV on my Panasonic UB820.

Oh, you're watching the "disc" in a nudge-nudge wink-wink kinda way?

I'm the first to want to rush to an upgrade but in this one I'm really struggling to see it. I can see the difference on my computer zoomed in, but from normal viewing distance to the tv, nothing much at all. I assume with DV there might be added benefit though (since these caps are sdr), but this micro minute visible improvement might be hard to justify an upgrade here.

Is the standard BD remastered or same old old disc?

If you're basing this entirely on still caps then ehhhh. I'm banking on the tighter compression being kinder to things like temporal resolution as well as spatial details.

Just checked out a few scenes.

I’m happier that the grain on this new 4k disc is indeed handled better (on my LG C7 OLED) than the original 4k disc! On the original, the “swarming ants” effect was just way too much for me.

I wouldn't put it that way, but I get that.

I'm not completely certain yet, but: The DV might be of service mid term, but long term I'd have to find a way around it and tame it otherwise anyway. Also, if I upgrade Starship Troopers, knowing myself, I might eventually want to upgrade all of them. As in Kwai and Groundhog as well - the others I already have anyway, but they gave me more reasons to or in case of Crouching Tiger will be an "accident" really. And not sure I want to go that route. The irony being that the itch is there already also because of said accident...

Had Sony put it in a nice package, I would've bit for sure. But I hate the Sony pop art - this isn't exactly ugly, but I really don't know what they were thinking re. Skeletor. Nothing and happened out of ignorance I guess.

Yeah, some of the early Sony grades are a pity IMO. This one in particular, because I don't see the mouse doing it more tastefully instead and with Sony that's most likely the end of the story now.
