A) The virus continues to spread during the shutdown and they re-open for Easter anyways, making it worse.

B) The shutdown shows positive signs of improving the situation but we reopen in time for Easter and any good the shutdown has done will be reversed as things quickly go back downhill.

Neither of these are good options. Unless we feel certain that by Easter infections have plummeted and we have it under control (unlikely in the US currently imo), the shutdown should continue.

Not back to normal. That's not going to happen for a long time. Probably not until next year. I'm referring to reopening certain non-essential business so that they can survive. Particularly those that can operate with the same social distance restrictions that many essential business are under right now. Clothing stores, jewelry stores, car dealerships, and other business that don't have a lot of traffic anyway. Allow restaurants to reopen to dine in but with fewer seats available.. Even movie theaters, with reduced seating.

I think the curve can be flattened within three weeks, and so do many experts. Having it go on for months would mean most of the country is infected and millions dead. It's just a matter of how much the restrictions should be eased and that depends on the area you live in. The key is to get the rate of infection under 1 and keep it there. Once that happens and the hospitals are not at capacity it's going to be a balancing act on how much is going to be restricted.

But social distancing will be the norm for a long while.

The virus was found on the cruise ship 17 days after people got off of it.

https://abcnews.go.com/Health/diamon...ry?id=69755804

Feel free to open up cities without completely disinfecting them (which is absolutely impossible) and see what happens.

I'll be in my apartment.

I really don't see people running out to go shopping and dining as every old and sick person that they know is dead -- and I can't think of anything more disgusting than the individuals who are suggesting ignoring reality.

Then you think wrong. The absolute worst of this is going to hit within the next 21 days in the most heavily affected parts of the U.S.

Who the hell wants to go jewellery or car shopping in the middle of all this?

Where are they going to wear all these new clothes? In their bathroom?

Seriously wtf lol

My sister needs new running shoes. Once I find out the size, I will get her an inexpensive pair.

Seriously I'm not alone. Many respectable scientists and doctors believe the curve will be flattened in a few weeks. Maybe it will, maybe it won't. But the point is, having much of the economy reopened in three weeks is not as far fetched as you many think.

I’ve heard people around my area talk about how they want to go shopping again at Best Buy, GameStop, Old Navy etc... while at the market to pick up some supplies. I’m not sure if most will tolerate a lockdown that lasts weeks or more honestly. Also many people out of work who may have been living check to check may not even have enough money to last them that long. I feel it’s almost lose/lose no matter what we do but eventually things must open again & go back to somewhat normal. All the spreading of fear, negativity & hopelessness isn’t helping either.

The arrogance of thinking the economy is just going to magically “switch on” in a few weeks is astounding. Sport seasons are cancelled, school years are cancelled, we are doubling the amount of infected people by the day, this isn’t something we can just ignore and restart our usual life again without suffering the consequences. People aren’t going to go shopping or dine out in restaurants anytime soon when thousands of people are still getting sick.

I’m just shocked to see people attempt to come across as reasonable and suggest a few hundred thousand deaths are worth “restarting the economy”. You know what the stock market loves? When our hospitals become overrun with sick people and they start choosing who gets treatment and who doesn’t. We aren’t even in the thick of things yet if you match our timeline up with China, Italy, or South Korea.

It took China 2 months to get it's cases low enough.

If we think that USA, with all that has been happening in the news, can achieve the same goal in less time. That is wishful thinking.

Most cities didn't start a lock down until last week, some even this week. If we take China and use their timeline, it would be May/June before we can see a lowering of cases.

As more people get tested, the case numbers will only grow. This doesn't include any people who might be infected and refuse to get tested or don't believe in it.

You can only protect yourself so much but if an idiot thinks its fun to lick or sneeze on items, there is no protection from that.

CNN just reported that a child in Los Angeles County has died from COVID-19.

KTLA 5 News reports:

Four more people, including a minor, have died of COVID-19 in Los Angeles County, officials announced Tuesday. That brings the total of deadly cases of the coronavirus in the county to 11. The L.A. County Department of Public Health only described the child who died as a Lancaster resident who lived in Lancaster. The city of Long Beach reported one of the four new cases on Monday, describing the patient as a woman in her 50s with underlying health issues. L.A. County officials on Tuesday said they were still working to confirm information about the two other patients who died.

Update: Los Angeles County official says that the minor that died is not a small child.

Well yeah there's quite a few people out there who are still running around doing things instead of staying at home and basically self-quarantining like they're supposed to. Going to have to get worse before those people get the message.

You know the phrase you pay for medical care with "your money or your life"?

Gilead Sciences is taking this to new heights in the middle of a pandemic. The company is applying for orphan drug status for Remdesivir (the ebola drug that works well for coronavirus patients in dire straits) and not giving out compassionate use exemptions to new patients.

An ice rink inside a Madrid shopping mall was turned into a temporary morgue on Monday to deal with a surge in deaths in the Spanish capital due to the coronavirus, local officials said. The ice rink at the Palacio de Hielo, or Ice Palace, shopping centre – which according to its web page has the capacity for 1,800 skaters – will be used "to store bodies," a spokeswoman for Madrid city hall said. The number of new coronavirus cases in Spain jumped on Tuesday to 39,673 from 33,089 cases registered on Monday, the health ministry said. The number of fatalities rose to 2,696 overnight from 2,182. Yesterday Madrid city hall said the city’s 14 public cemeteries would cease to accept more bodies because staff there did not have adequate protective gear.

"Preparations have begun so that the installations ceded by the Ice Palace can receive bodies, and facilitate the work of funeral services in the face of this exceptional situation," the regional government of Madrid said in a statement. This improvised morgue will start being used "in the coming hours," it added.

"This is a temporary and exceptional measure which aims to mitigate the pain of the family members of the victims and the situation hospitals in Madrid are facing." The shopping mall is located in Madrid’s northern Hortaleza neighbourhood, not far from the Ifema congress centre which has been converted into a field hospital for coronavirus patients that will have a total of 5,500 beds. Under an agreement reached by the regional government of Madrid and the defence ministry on Friday, soldiers have started to help transport the remains of people who died from the virus to morgues.

Meanwhile, in America...

The president said earlier today he “would love to have the country opened up and just raring to go by Easter,” but public health experts have expressed doubt that the coronavirus crisis will be sufficiently curtailed by April 12.

“Easter is a very special day for me,” Trump told Fox News. “And I say, wouldn’t it be great to have all the churches full?”

The president added that the religious holiday aligned with when he expected the threat of the virus to start subsiding. “I think it would be a beautiful time, and it’s just about the timeline that I think is right.” Trump said.

Public health experts, including senior official Dr Anthony Fauci, have said Americans will need to adhere to social distancing restrictions for at least several more weeks to stop the spread of the virus.

Just found out two friends of the family (husband and wife couple) both have coronavirus. From what I’ve been told, he has it bad enough to be hospitalized, but the hospital they went to turned him away. So they are both home right now, self isolating.
