I say we should open the economy slowly as the President has suggested. I am more of a believer in herd community rather than a vaccine. Life will go on soon we have to be patient and reasonable. I am going to use facts in my life and I am not going to sit in a corner in a fetal position living scared either. Death happens it sucks and I know people hate it but not much we can do about it either. People are attributing the lower death rates only to social distancing....maybe so but maybe the initial estimates were blown out of proportion and we overestimated this. It's sad neither side will listen to a differing view point without getting upset and labeling you an awful person if you dare decide to THINK for yourself.

My comment isn't BS. The VAST majority of Americans (and people globally) either do not have COVID-19 or have been okay if they get it. More people have died from other causes, but you aren't freaking out about those causes (Heart disease, cancer, etc). Also, the VAST majority of those who have sadly died have had underlying health problems (obesity, heart disease, kidney disease, lung problems, etc).

Is MrHT short for "Mr. Hyper-Tension?" Just try to find something that relaxes you. Sheesh.

Seriously mate, avoid the news. We have this place over here in the UK called ‘Beachy Head’ which is this wonderful hotspot where people love to throw themselves over the cliffs. You may have seen it on the TV.

Regardless, 3 people threw themselves over there last weekend and I don’t want you to give the government the benefit of an extra figure...even though it hasn’t been reported anywhere in our news because, obviously, any non-Covid death is negligible and non news-worthy.

Stay sane my man.
I mentioned in a post a couple of days ago that a good friend of my family died from the Coronavirus. Her husband and daughter have it too. Thankfully they haven't died, but both have high fevers that won't go away and both feel painfully weak. They have attested to the fact that it's really THAT bad. And by the way, none of them have any underlying health conditions; not even the one that died.

In addition, my mom's friend's son is a nurse at a hospital. He also attested to the fact that it's really insane at the hospital he works in due to the overwhelming amount of Covid-19 patients there and the rapid rate of deaths he's encountering.

The news is not overhyped. This is real, folks!

In California, governor Newsom mentioned herd immunity several times in his address on Tuesday, so it would appear that he thinks it's a possibility. He does plan on opening the economy, but not until the curve starts to bend downward and that the hospitals can handle any surges that result from a reopening stage.

It's going to be a "dance" between keeping the economy open and the cases under control, until there is a vaccine (or, herd immunity, whichever comes first). If opening one sector causes too many cases for example, then it'll be closed again.

Going to be a lot of trial and error in that regard, opening as much of the economy as possible while keeping the case load to an acceptable level.

I just wanted to acknowledge the fact that many of us aren’t at our best.

I have no shame in admitting that it isn’t the virus that has affected me, it’s the government’s stringent measures that have done the damage.

The news IS overhyped...that's how they function and get people to watch. There are various case studies that prove that exact notion.

I'm sorry to hear about your friends - no one has said that it's not a series sickness. It will knock some people on their butt and give them a hard time while recovering.

Again, when looking purely at the numbers, the VAST VAST VAST majority have underlying issues that contribute to death. Are there exceptions? Of course.

Really, I haven't heard that at all and I've been reading the Guardian live updates all day and half the night for well over a month.

The measures were put in place to STOP that from happening and thus far it has worked brilliantly.

All I have heard is that they don't have enough personal protective gear and that seems to be pretty true all round the world.

There has been 500 - 1,000 people dying a day in the UK for over 2 weeks with little proof it is slowing, so it sounds pretty real to me.

You are of course allowed your opinion, but do you really believe the world would shut itself down and destroy its economy for shit and giggles?

Frankly it disgusts me that some people seem to think that not enough people are dying from it to warrant the reaction.

I know we've already fallen pretty much as far we can as a race, but really...

I think people just need to respect the minimum 6 feet and stay away. I mean is getting within 6 feet probably going to hurt someone? No but unless you know for sure better safe than sorry. It's common courtesy under normal circumstances and should be a legal requirement under these.

Here's what I believe....the virus is a serious thing because we don't know as much about it as we do know about other viruses. MOST people, will either not get it or will be okay if they do get it (in other words, they won't require hospitalization).

With that said, do I trust Bill Gates and "Big Pharma" (aka pharmaceutical companies)? Absolutely not. Do I trust Donald Trump and the American government (Republican or Democrat)? Absolutely not.

Take as many precautions as are advised. Take the time to better yourself - whether that is through hobbies, faith, or something else. What is complaining going to do to help anyone? Nada. Here's a hint...NO ONE likes being locked down. NO ONE likes seeing loved ones sick. NO ONE likes seeing the economy crash. We just gotta get through it.
Well said aptly named poster

I know in California we have at least 4 times the ICU capacity as there are patients currently, and ICU cases have leveled off (meaning just as many beds becoming empty as there are new arrivals).

Anyway it's good news that apparently the hospitals are not going to be overwhelmed like they were in Italy.
I haven't been to a hospital, but my mother and mother-in-law went recently. They both described it as "eerily quiet". There have been a lot of encouraging efforts to free hospital space and utilize resources in PA. In my hometown, for example, an old correctional school has been repurposed as an "alternative care site" for patients that do not have COVID-19. They have 100 beds there, and I think they're going to start using some further north in the Pocono Valley.

There are plenty of hospitals that aren't currently overwhelmed for a variety of reasons:

1) They aren't taking patients for elective procedures
2) With current stay-at-home orders in place there are considerably less people out and about, and thereby much less car accidents and random injuries
3) They aren't allowing (or severely limiting) visitors
4) People are afraid to go to the hospital right now. Unfortanately, there are some people who probably should be seen and are ignoring or downplaying issues they're experiencing.

On the flip side, people have told me they "can't believe how many ventilators they need" at their particular hospital. It's important to note things will vary from place to place, region to region.

I have to say I find it disappointing when someone interprets a now quiet hospital as a evidence we "didn't need to do anything in the first place," when keeping hospitals quiet is the entire point of social distancing, shutdowns, and quarantines..

Umm I take it you don’t watch TV where the Govt./NHS advertise every 15 minutes preaching about saving the NHS?

How about the UK Govt social media ‘campaign’ where their slogan was “ACT LIKE YOU’VE GOT IT”.

Seriously? You haven’t seen these? I purposely don’t watch the news or get involved with Social Media.

The message to “Act like you’ve got it” is probably the biggest **** up in recent advertising history. Not only will you have the typical hypos thinking they’ve “got it”, you will now have a whole new generation of people “thinking they’ve got it” because that is what the govt. message relays, and those people will be inundating the A&E depts in their local hospitals....the gov are encouraging the very same behaviour they’re apparently trying to deter.

I didn't vote for this particular government and I don't trust them so no I don't watch it. I know they got the psychopath who ran the political campaign everybody fell for back to come up with their virus promos though so I'm not surprised.

That does not mean it is fake virus and that the measures are unwarranted however, in fact they should've happened about 6 weeks earlier. But they do need to go overboard so idiots will take some notice and stay at home.

I personally listen to what the scientists say and use common sense.

All I have to do to do my part is stay in my house and that's what I'll be doing until I hear from a credible scientific source that it's time to start going back to normal.

Have you noticed that they haven’t included any other viruses that the deceased have in their systems? “The deceased tested positive for Covid-19”.

Did the BBC News also tell you that the deceased also tested positive for Influenza? What killed them? What proof do you have?

You don’t have any proof do you. You’re just reiterating something that the media have told you.

It’s a balancing act.

Not enough deaths people say it’s a scam. To many deaths, we should have done more. Etc.

They're just trying to save face and stay in business/earn trust. It's basically the only strategy some of these companies can use.

Yea absolutely. They're so transparent. It's just annoying receiving all of these unsolicited emails that you can't even unsub from.
