More importantly, without taking drastic measures it is estimated that up to 2 million Americans could die. The US population is 325 million, how is the # of deaths going to be literally 3,075 TIMES worse than China using current figures?

Exhibitors, which include AMC Theatres and Regal Cinemas, are looking for loan guarantees to ease liquidity issues imposed by fixed costs in the face of non-existent revenue.

Shame on them if true. Theaters should get a good percentage of that. If I knew at least $10 of the cost (half) was going directly to the theater nearest my zip code, then my interest in purchasing would increase 100x. The greedy studios should have this in mind and take care of the places that show their movies.

Yeah, 20%+ of the jobs out there are going to experience "unprecedented" crisis. They all want bailout money. Why don't the countries of the world just agree to stop charging each other for all services for a few months (and then reassess) instead of playing, who can profit the most from this crisis and who can go out of business? Wipe the books clean for two months on major costs. Ultimately, they're just numbers in a computer anyway (or pieces of paper in your pocket). We use a system where SOMEONE has to be at the bottom and someone has to lose and someone has to starve. No wonder the aliens hide from us. We're primitive barbarians by comparison.

Pithy movie quotes aside, you are going to see *every* industry line up to the titty. Bailouts for airlines? hotels? The reasoning is their business dried up overnight and had the income equivalent of cardiac arrest - but so did everyone else... restaurants, retail, movie theaters, auto industry, etc etc.

In the coming weeks or months its going to be just like 2008, people who want bailouts for every industry imaginable, or people who want to watch it all burn. Small business and self-employed vs. big business just like in 2008 will happen again: "where's my bailout?"

Only this time it isn't restricted to financial companies, its nearly every industry.

Why is it unrealistic to expect a vaccine for coronavirus in a few months?

Nobody’s ever seen this virus before. Therefore, if you’re interested in making a vaccine, you first had access to that virus only a couple months ago. That’s not long.

[To make a vaccine] you first need to make a decision as to what approach you want to take. Then you have to do extensive animal model testing to make sure that the approach that you’ve taken is safe in animals, and that it induces an immune response which would likely be protective. Then you gradually do studies in people to make sure it’s safe, and then to make sure that it induces an immune response. That takes time, a lot of time, typically years. Then and only then, are you ready to put it into people to see whether or not it works in an outbreak situation.

Vaccine development is tightly regulated. How much of that is about safety vs. red tape?

If you’re going to be testing this in otherwise healthy people who are very, very unlikely to die from this infection, you better make sure it’s safe. So you want those regulations in place.

An example is the dengue vaccine. When it was tested in Latin America and Philippines, it was found to actually increase your risk of dengue shock syndrome. Children who were less than 9 years of age, who had never been exposed to the virus before, were actually more likely to be hurt by the vaccine than helped by it. Now, you only knew that from doing large clinical trials with tens of thousands of people.

The history of medical breakthroughs is littered with tragedy. You want to make sure that things are safe.

I think that because we falsely overrate, or incorrectly rate, what the mortality rate is, we’re willing to accept that things will be rushed through. In fact, coronavirus doesn’t have a high mortality rate.

There’s a virus that the CDC currently estimated has killed between 20,000 and 45,000 people in the United States -- influenza. But only half the country gets that vaccine.

There’s only 14 deaths [in the U.S., as of Friday afternoon] from COVID-19, but everybody would get a vaccine now.

The point being: We’re not very good at assessing risk.

We won't be able to spend a fraction of the money because all we will be able to buy is food.

Spend it on an online company? I'd rather give it charity first.
