Going to have to buy a new receiver. Currently, I'm going out from my 4k player to the TV, running audio through the arc back to the receiver for surround, which outputs as PCM. I bought my receiver six years ago because it promised 4k pass-through, but specs and tech changed to HDMI 2.2, which is fine. My receiver won't pass 4k HDR, it downconverts to 1080 (oddly enough, it has no problem passing upconverted video -- Hugo's blu is upscaled and shows as 4k, while Harry Potter 4k HDR shows as 1080, so I had to bypass the receiver and go straight to the display). I'm not upset by it. I usually figure a ten-year window when buying home theater tech, I just know I'm not getting the benefit of a receiver that can handle new audio codecs and the STRDN840 is doing what it can (PCM).

So I'll be in the market for a more modern receiver later in the year. Not crazy about Atmos, I don't have a man-cave and my wife hates the eight speakers surrounding the living room as it is (no matter how tastefully hidden they are). Putting speakers on the ceiling is a no-go. Just want a solid 7.1 Sony receiver that can pass HDR and DolbyVision signals, with some pretense towards future-proofing.

Also, Florian has done consultant work for Samsung before (https://www.cepro.com/article/samsun..._open_standard). I don’t think it would be that difficult for Samsung to commission him and his website (https://hdr.avtop.com/hdr_solutions_avtop) as a proxy for access to an HDR10+ sample clip, as you’ll note his company already offers other free video sample downloads.
Yes, I hope that will happen one day, before I retire. I have a lot of time for Florian. In fact I'd hope that would have happened at any time over the last two years...

HDCP (encryption) 2.2
UHD Blu-ray uses HDMI 2.0a for HDR. Confusing, I know.

The new spec is HDMI 2.1 which is slowly being rolled out with devices.

Also wouldn't really recommend a Sony receiver. I've had much better performance with something like Onkyo or Denon. Good price points too.

Judging by the latest press release posted by Pieter in the HDR10+ thread, they've lost Warner Bros.

Didn't think it was a coincidence that Warner's latest new releases have all been DV, not to mention big catalog releases like The Matrix.

Wonder how Heat would have spun this. It would have been interesting to see him explain how the loss of Warner would be a good thing.

mrtickle, the Samsung sponsored event is yet to come, it’s next Wed. and Thurs. I’m assuming there will be at least one of these type local reporters covering it:

Not up in Port Orchard area, yes to S.D. area. Down the hill from where the twitter pic was taken, some filming for 2 days took place on NAS North Island –

b.t.w. a revision being made (but yet to be publicly published) to ‘2100’ (https://www.itu.int/dms_pubrec/itu-r...6-I!!PDF-E.pdf) is to change hybrid log gamma’s black level adjustment formula offset from linear area to image area.

Haha. Leave it to soccer players to over dramatize a Coke commercial.

Let señor Greene show them fancy boys how it's done.

That was a great ad from back in the day and I even remember the reunion piece - https://www.fastcompany.com/3056107/...36-years-later

But football players needn’t worry too much about lower extremity injuries (shown at the beginning of the commercial) impairing their quality of life later on in age because worst case scenario, joint replacement has evolved significantly since then. What they have to be much more concerned about is CTE -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...encephalopathy

And the many years the NFL purposely ignored or buried the issue.

As was alerted to Blu-ray.com readership ~ four years ago (Sept. 2014) –

I have a friend who attended the FIFA World Cup in Brazil this past summer where he and others (public viewing) watched a match on two 80-ish sized 4K TVs which were set up close to each other. One received the 4K feed whereas the other received the local Globus HD broadcast feed.

The 4K broadcast showed much more picture real estate than the HD broadcast....

Sooo, as viewers, it was easier and much more pleasing to follow the ball and movement of the players over a greater expanse of the field (with the additional plus of greater detail) than for the HD delivered version.
Regarding the notion that there is value to 4K acquisition and delivery (compared to HD) not only for the sake of increased resolution (a concept, reporters like from CNET, etc. just couldn’t comprehend or address because they were too busy posting viewing distance charts and visual acuity, which even with regards to that, actually were imprecise because they don’t take into account things like Vernier acuity)

So, for a video illustration of the above concept of more picture real estate, flash forward 4 years to Vincent T. -

Also, another concept (no blown out or bleached highlights with HDR as compared to SDR) introduced to Blu-ray.com readers ~ 2 years ago (May 2016) as to the value of HDR for the bright (sunny) side of the image - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...y#post12202983

Now illustrated in video by Vincent - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdQ8YZG6rWg#t=5m11s

As a complete HDR/4K/UHD novice here who has just made the jump from a 1080p Sony SXRD rear projection set to a brand spankin' new 65" Samsung NU8000 4K display, I had some questions with regard to how my new TV is going to "handle" some of the more advanced HDR algorithms, being that it doesn't support supreme high-end tech like Dolby Vision, etc. (I believe it's equipped with HDR10 or HDR Plus? This is a "premium" 4K TV, but not of Samsung's QLED series of displays; it is from the 8 Series, which is their best line before hitting the QLEDs, if I understand it right...).

Being that I will not be using a UHD player for the immediate time being with the NU8000, what should the HDR settings in the TV be set to? I will be sending a 1080p signal from my Blu-ray player for now, along with a 1080i signal from the cable box, so what should the HDR10 settings in the Samsung be adjusted to? Does it matter?

Also -- what happens when I eventually get a UHD player and play discs that boast the "advanced" forms of HDR such as Dolby Vision? Being that the Samsung doesn't have these advanced operations, only HDR Plus/10, would the signal from the 4K disc get "downconverted," so to speak, on my set? And how is that going to look?

It will play in HDR10 and will look as good as any other HDR10 material.
