The BBC/NHK transfer function was added to HEVC so there are now two different ways to encode HDR video in HEVC. Overall I think it is good to have the option to use a relative luminance HDR system and it will likely be used in the broadcast industry.

![]() ITU (Andy Q.’s group) hopes to have a report out addressing the HDR broadcast imperative this summer. Beyond that, live HDR (broadcast) will produce special challenges dealing with, for example, picture-in-picture applications and graphic overlays to ensure a comfortable viewing experience for consumers. Also, another significant thing which will have to be considered eventually is how to *control* the advertisers, i.e. commercials. It would not be good form for the industry to repeat the situation that led to the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act (CALM) by inserting HDR enabled commercials which don’t abide by the parameters used with HDR programming itself. |

Geez, mike’s in the doghouse again! What did I miss? Something on a thread outside of the Tech forum again?

![]() ![]() Anyway, give me a few moments to find another worthy YouTube learning or entertainment clip at least for a diversion in the meantime….unless of course everyone has a burning desire for listening to me post about my admiration of the on-field sportsmanship and fair play ![]() Wish I was up there in your neck of the woods to either watch some of the World Cup matches or else compete in the http://www.bcbikerace.com/the-journey/the-stages/ |

To introduce the potential benefit of HDR (which admittedly also has a potential for abuse, as I’ve outlined/detailed before …anyway, to show off HDR to newcomers to the concept…. rather than presenting SDR/HDR side-by-side demos, I agree with Stacey

One thing stood out for me was the backlight has to be increased in order for HDR to benefit. If so wouldn't that lessen the lifespan of the TV itself? |

![]() My enthusiasm for UHD BD is diminishing rapidly though Mr P. I'm still fascinated by all the technical tidbits (as people may have gathered, I'm a fiend for tech stuff) but I won't be getting into UHD BD at the start, if at all. |

With LCD (LED) technology, nobody’s really worrying. With HDR and OLED displays, yes, there is already some concern , which could be exacerbated by a potential future nits/arms race |

Hell, that would cure him (or anyone) of their online feistiness. ![]() P.S. On the other hand, just wondering, maybe mike is more cunning than we all presume and he intentionally pushes his luck with other members complaining to the mods because he already has a pre-planned absence anyway from Blu-ray.com in order to go work on a new project, go on holiday, etc. Last edited by Penton-Man; 06-29-2015 at 04:53 PM.
