Not sure what other folks are saying, but as I indicated on the last page now that native HDR10+ is being somewhat supported (work in progress) in Davinci Resolve Studio, it would be possible for some industrious fellow like fellow Blu-ray.com member zmarty to create some content and independently prove or disprove the current industry thinking that HDR10+ is positioned to be most useful for when the TV has luminance <1000 cd/m² and a color performance < DCI-P3 for most accurately replicating creative intent to the home viewer.

Note to z: there is also an option in Resolve Studio 15 to make a straight HDR10 file, not HDR10+ so a fair comparison could be produced.

Default Champions league final in HDR?

I know it was broadcast (some places) in 4K, but was it HDR?

Yes, snooker has Red, White, Yellow, Green, Brown, Blue, Pink, Black

[Show spoiler]Snooker loopy nuts are we, we are snooker, loopy!

[Show spoiler]Pot the Red and spin back, for the yellow, Green Brown, Blue Pink and Black

Sorry! Couldn’t resist that song , it’s stuck in my head. Doubt anyone outside the UK will have heard of this song. So sorry for any major confusion.

You are overlooking a massively important factor. HDR10+ metadata is created with access to the entire file which is not live (also even though the metadata is generated by analysing the file, it could technically easily be hand-curated later, although I understand that they currently "don't bother" to even try).

The TV has to process the data "live" as it comes in, and it cannot see ahead. The TV's "Active HDR" or whatever custom system is used has no possible knowledge of a very bright or very dark scene coming up in 20 seconds which might be 1 second long or 1 minute long and affect the metadata values that would ideally be used.

Think of it as the difference between single-pass live MPEG encoding, and two-pass slow very accurate MPEG encoding.

For this reason alone, HDR10+ will always have the potential to provide the very best dynamic metadata, superior to anything the TV can conjure up on the fly.

All good in theory (and let's not forget that the first pass of DV metadata is ALSO generated by an automatic process), but a recent Samsung (I think?) demo of HDR10+ showed that the TV lagged slightly behind when processing the metadata anyway, although if they could get that latency issue sorted then it should still be superior to any in-house 'active HDR' processing. (People sometimes lump Sony in with the 'active HDR' crowd but it's not the case IMO, they use a tone map that ignores luminance metadata completely and analyses the content itself, assigning the incoming signal to what the TV can handle according to how it's been set up (almost like relative luminance, in a way).)

Unless someone was doing a trial somewhere, I don’t think so and seeing Ramos smirk in HDR after this - https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/lat...s-league-final

just would have made the match much the worse for me and I presume also for other supporters of the ‘beautiful’ game who’ve been familiar with his antics for years, like Geoff, see - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...l#post15107284

because not just for specular highlights, but HDR is also about precise control of deep darkness and shadows

At the end of the day it’s really a balancing act how consumer televisions best do display management, because on the one hand in trying to preserve the brightness of the pixel, that may introduce color shifts that make detection of subtle shades difficult to see. Whereas, on the other hand, tone and gamut mapping can work to preserve these subtle gradations by maintaining hue subtleties in the remapping process, but in so doing may sacrifice the overall luminance a bit.

Some AV journalists think accuracy to creative intent (mastering display) is synonymous to the most pleasing subjective image (as seen on consumer display) when they do their comparisons, which is not always the case.

Aye, I played snoooker a few times as a wee lad in ‘68 when I had a summer abroad for some learning in Oxford. But not like those blokes in the video... (apologies to the Queen’s English, and all)
