Well, that's what Samsung has been working towards, they have been laser focused on differentiation. Sony is trying to push the market towards accuracy, and what zi saw of the A9F, they are doing great.

BBC didn't seem to think too highly of AV1, they saw significant bitrate gains with JEM tho (whatever that is)

"We also tested the latest video coding technologies being proposed within the Joint Video Exploration Team (JVET), a joint MPEG and ITU group created to explore new tools with video coding capabilities beyond HEVC. The reference software used in the exploration phase of JVET, called Joint Exploration Model (JEM), was used in our performance tests. This software was leveraged as the base for the JVET work on the development of a new video coding standard that will succeed to HEVC, to be known as Versatile Video Coding (VVC). Even though JEM was created as an exploration software model, many of its tools are likely to be included in the final version of the VVC specification, expected to be completed by the end of 2020." |

The southern California locale in and around the San Diego area (in this case La Jolla) draws interests other than only Top Gun or Top Gun: Maverick…..https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...m#post14962558
Admittedly, I spent too much time playing with the sea lions in the nearby cove. |

Study…..http://www.navair.navy.mil/nawcwd/vx...iew_110110.pdf So, you see Top Gun: Maverick fans, in the years since Top Gun (1986), Mav didn’t spend all his time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdXkUyC3VNQ#t=4s, there’s more to the story than that. |

Well, they have the capability of offering a broader spectrum of blacks, whites and greys because - ![]() Or, if one prefers it charted out in nits and f-stops – ![]() *Caveat to thee above ^ . For some real world perspective though, don't get too infatuated by the numbers, as there is a difference between nits/f-stops capability and realized nits/f-stops while viewing content, realized being effected by such things as the grade and ambient surround light (which negates some of the numbers advantage for the OLED variant of UHD Premium on the low end). I did a incomplete calibration for SDR, using delta-e ICtCp color difference. The results visually are fantastic.
I used Skyfall as my reference disc, and ICtCp seems to bring out more detail, brighter highlights, brighter light sources. Not HDR bright, but definitely brighter than what delta-e 2000 produces. Detail is next level, for SDR content, thats also being upscaled to UHD resolution. I almost forgot about the boost to shadow detail and black detail. 2.2 BT.1886 gamma @ 100 nits. I didn't get a chance to do 80-100% luminance and start CMS calibration, but I suspect color will not need much tweaking, white point should be spot on. Took a trip to Best Buy a couple days ago, to check out Sony Z9F or A9F. The A9F is what they had on display, it exhibited similar visual attributes, that made it stand out, compared the competition in the magnolia center. It's possible Sony is factory calibrating with delta-e ICtCp. I don't have the software Dolby Vision, but plan to do some limited grayscale work. HDR10 content should get the full treatment, in about a week. Hopefully, I will get access to the ICtCp colorspace. |

Since I’m a sports fan like Jimmy –
and I’m not at the SMPTE conference this year, but rather chasing motorcycles and fighter jets, I was emailed this piece from a colleague for comment - https://www.thebroadcastbridge.com/c...tential-of-hdr With regards to soccer stadiums, shadows and such, I say, opinions vary and I tend to agree with this….. “We can't wait for the time when broadcasters adopt HDR for the same reasons – imagine watching live sport broadcast from a stadium split between shadow and bright sunlight without a sudden jump in the exposure as the ball goes into the brighter section.” ^ from the Alliance - https://alliance.experienceuhd.com/n...range-imply-tv In practice, HDR can deliver the entire event from shadows to highlights more seamlessly which I think was evident to anyone who watched some of FIFA World Cup 2018 matches in HDR. And with regards to games at basketball courts, real on site tests (rather than theory) has shown that HDR acquisition and production is not so easy and “ideal’ as Pete would think…https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...t#post13954871 |

Especially now that the Top Gun sequel is filming, apparently, there are a lot of pics on social media in settings with fighter jets and such casually implying (#) to the uninformed that they are of the actor Tom Cruise (along with various photoshopped images of his newest jet, unlike the real deal, as pictured here - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...g#post15582090)
I guess that’s o.k. ![]() |
